So I'm looking into Retrax retractable bed covers with the T tracks for bars (want to mount thule and bike rack on bed)
Concerned about canister being held up by 4 small screws. Seems it will break off eventually. Anyone have this system and have issues? Wondering if there is enough vertical space between wheel wells (short bed Taco) and canister for a support board or if 2 pillars would help support it.
    Any advice would be appreciated!

i had/have similar concerns, but figured 2 things: 1) the cover is closed most of the time, so the bulk of the weight will almost always be on the tracks, and 2) lifetime warranty on the PRO version.

also, just checked and it looks like the canister sits on the wheel wells. if it doesn't, there isn't much space in between.

I agree about the weight, though bouncing down trails takes its toll.
Careful though, lifetime "limited" warranty. Researching I learned that they charge $600 to $900 for new cover after 3yrs warranty expired.
Do you own one? Is it plastic or aluminum?

I just bought a used 2016 double cab TRD OffRoad that came with the aluminum retrax cover. So far I like it I was never a bed cover guy with previous trucks but I think come hunting season being able to leave everything in the bed and lock it it will be sweet.

Indeed, that will be sweet. I'm going to get the bed bars so there will be storage above and still have access to full bed. Hopefully figure out a good system for fly fishing & camping gear. I will post pics of how it turns out in the next couple of weeks.
Your used aluminum still looks okay? No wear Mark's or scratches from rolling up?

Picture isn’t great but I like it. There are some scratches but I would think they are from sliding stuff across it.

Correct the canister sits on the wheel wells in the SB version, don't know about the long box version.

I have the Retrax One XR, it's been very sturdy. I even put my tent on the Yakima Jetstreams and they've been fine. No signs of wear or the canister coming loose, been about 8 months so far

I have the Retrax Pro XR. Sold a Diamondback SE to get this, as it's much more practical when leaving bike racks attached.

Yeah, thinking about the plastic instead of aluminum. I'm in Colorado and ice may be an issue.

@hamburglar i know you mentioned fly gear, I was always a Yakima rack guy with the ski holders for my surf casting rods but I don’t think I am gonna put them in the Tacoma. I am probably gonna try these removable ones this year Cheaper than a full set of Yakima racks and has great reviews on Amazon.

I had a Roll-N-Lock on my Tundra. Great cover except for winter weather. For the occasional snow we get in Northern Virginia, I was always diligent about clearing the snow off ASAP. However, some always would remain as we usually get the heavy, wet snow. After a hard freeze, the cover would only retract about a foot or so. IMG_0004.jpg

Any pictures around the bed rails; I'm curious about fit and finish. There is very little information about this and 3rd gen Tacomas (that I can find), care to review or comment on the install, weather tight capability, etc.?

So its been nothing but thunderstorms in Colorado this summer and very little leakage so far with this cover! It is NOT water tight, but there is a foam seal on both rails, a rubber lip at the bulk head (and foam sticky pads that seal corners of bulk head bar), and weather stripping type rubber at tail gate. Seems to seal pretty well although some water comes through on side and tailgate. I think some slight adjustment on tension and perfecting positioning will fix it. Also drain tubes that empty canister which require expanding pre-existing drain holes at head of bed.
Install takes 2 competent people a couple hours. I did it in 4 hrs with 1.5 competent people...:ballchain:
Also, BE SUPER CAREFUL DRILLING LEFT DRAIN!!! Dont drill through wiring or fuel fill line. I used a metal block to protect it...
