The hard part is that you have to 'show good cause' by proving that you or your family is in danger and that carrying a firearm is necessary. Have to submit a written statement and LA turns most of those down I think. Its exceedingly difficult if you don't have a genuinely good reason in the city's opinion.

Of course this is on top of the test and background checks

Crime is out of control. What you see on the news is not even 1% of what is going on. Always be aware of your surroundings, who is standing next to you or walking around you. There are people who want what you have or some POS that is going to use you as a gang initiation. Self protection is not just protecting yourself, but your loved ones, the elderly or even the weak and innocent. Good luck out there, CA is going to explode one day.

I carry a knife, I have so many I carry a different one everyday. But not for protection, I have no need for that. Cause I'm a knife enthusiast & a collector.

It’s not as simple for others as it was for you though.
Isnt your sheriff or issuing top cop/ county 2a friendly ?
The more east you live in ca the greater probability you could get approved.

So far only switchblades and fixed blades are considered illegal to carry in public AFAIK.

But if there's a mass stabbing or something with a pocket knife I'm sure that'll change

Anywhere in rural CA you probably won't have much of a problem as long as you're not a crazy person with a record. Rural parts of the state are very different demographics than the big city parts.

Any measure of self defense is useless if you’re not aware of your surroundings and haven’t trained and aren’t prepared to use it. Gun, pocket knife, nunchucks, grenades- whatever, it doesn’t matter what you carry if you can’t deploy it in time and aren't comfortable using it.
That’s said, criminals aren’t looking for a fight, they’re looking for victims. Chances are the dude on the train wasn’t paying attention and he was singled out because he was an easy target. Head down, buried in your phone in public tells anyone that’s looking for an easy buck that you won’t be ready to react. Head on a swivel tells would be thieves to think twice. People these days are so indifferent to others that they purposely avoid eye contact.
Stay vigilant and don’t be a target- that is your best self defense.

Taser pulse with spare cartridge and an ASP Palm Defender.

Haven't had the need to use the Pulse, but the ASP sure corrected the attitude of a drunk asshole in San Diego who took to pissin' on the old lady's front door as I was walking up, and then had the nuts to get his back up about being called out on it. Warned him twice to back off. Third time he caught a face full of capsicum. I could have departed then before he recovered, but he was between me and the condo door, and I needed in. After a good 20-30 seconds of him being incapacitated, he came again. Another dose of attitude correction was all that was required for that guy.
