I recently went to change out my tail-light due to the LED component going out. I have the replacement assembly ready to go. However, when I removed the existing one I noticed the wiring has been modified from OEM and is no longer compatible with the standard wiring harness.

I purchased my 2011 Tacoma a few years back with only 20k miles on it. I'm a bit surprised that this wiring has been modified.

Anyone have suggestions on getting this wiring fixed so I can install a standard tail light assembly? I try to do repairs myself when I can but haven't run across wiring issues before.

    Incorrect one:

The other side, wired correctly, for reference:

Looks like it was for a shell or trailer connection, maybe. What does the back of the new light look like? In the 2 aftermarket tail lights I have seen you have to remove all of the harness from the OEM lights and reuse it. The led tube lights have adaptors you plug into the OEM bulb socket.

Ah, yes it must have been for the trailer the previous owner had. The replacement just has the one connection for the wiring harness (as pictured for the other side here).

not sure i follow. I see the other person added 2 wires to the old lights. just cut those and install your new ones. those 2 lights look to be going to your shell 3rd brake light. so if you want that to work i would add it like they did. (but cleaner lol)
