Hey guys, I've seen some things done here and there across a few forums but I call on you for direct support here! I am looking for ideas on how to optimize space in the back of the double cab. So I've been driving without the bottom cushions in the back and the top pieces folded down to make a platform for big items and easy cleaning. I took out the bottoms because they got in the way of my seat backing up and I like an excuse for not giving group rides across town. It'd be really great if I could save the seat cushions that are getting smushed right now because of their permanent position down as well as have good seats for resale (if it ever comes).

Here's what I'm after in the end product:
    • A platform with enough space to slide a rifle under is ideal
    • the top surface is carpet for the hound's sake
    • easy access to factory built in storage for jack and recovery stuff
    • nothing permanent or irreversible (no holes drilled in truck etc.)
Your ideas, comments, links, and direction are much appreciated. Thanks!

Here is what I did. It is made of 1/2" birch plywood, screwed and glued. I covered it with auto carpet. It is W 25" X H 10" X L 51". I bolted to the outside seat mounts, so no drilling. I use it for my folding table and chairs. I also removed the cover to the factor compartments so they are still usable without removing the platform (bottom of platform is open, see attached drawings).

Well mine is an access cab and made this up with 3/4" plywood. Have room underneath for stuff out of sight from thieves.1106171118.jpg

Thanks guys. I like the way xena1 did it as opposed to the box method but would be interested in seeing in more detail how Glenn used the seat bolts to secure it in place. I'll likely build it like a table and have a leg at each corner and on center hump. Would you recommend using legs as support or a single piece of wood shaped to fit over the center hump? Don't need as much space as Glenn has but want more than Xena does under the board. Thanks again!

The issue is with the DC you will not have any space under the platform that the AC used. The seat bolt I picked up is the furthest outboard second from the rear (it is just aft of the lower seatbelt attach bolt. Just added a bracket to the box that lined up with the bolt hole. Should have taken a picture of it before install but did not. For clarification I removed seat backs and bottoms. If you make it like the AC I would put it on hinges so you can still access the built in storage under the seat. Good luck!

hey, any particular questions? General update: I rocked the no seats for a while with wool blanket on the floor portion for dog/concealment of whatever I wanted to put in floor wells. Loved the utility, but the noise from the back is obnoxious without the seats acting as sound barrier. So I got 10 sqft of Noico for $20 and put that on the wall behind the plastic bins and it really makes a difference. Have the seats in right now for visiting family and will likely keep them in. I got a kurgo hammock to solve the dog problem (good product) and am removing bins in favor of molle to increase storage and organization. This way the stuff against the back wall will be covered up from peering eyes by the seats, I'll have double sound insulation, and I can give a third person a ride every now and then.

Love what Xena did with the Access Cab. Looks very professional. I'd like to do the same thing to my Doublecab. I'm used to an F350 Crewcab with the rear seat taken out and a dog crate put in it's place so my duck dog can get warm when we get out of the swamps on those frigid days.

I ended up removing just the 60% of my rear seat and left one seat in the back in case I have to carry another passenger in a pinch. I also wanted to leave the plastic storage unit (that comes stock underneath the seats) exposed and wanted to access it without much fuss. I built it out of left over particle board from another project, then used spray adhesive to line it with thin packaging foam, and then carpeted the whole thing.
