Powerline might be a better setup

I used to use wireless but i hated how i'd always end up disconnecting plus my signal wasnt very strong, so instead of spending 100+ on a new Wireless N router and wireless N adapter and run into the same problems again...i just got a powerline networking adapter kit from netgear. its like having a long ethernet cable from where ever your router is, to where your computer is using the electrical wiring in your house.

I'm amazed powerline networking hasn't caught on in the USA

Well now that the Airport Extreme supports dual band, they are about the same ;)

...we have laptops and mobile devices. I would hate to be tied down. Plus, a powerline kit is at least $90 and that only goes to one other room.

Your router cutting in and out was a sign of it about to go. Make sure your routers and modems are on a UPS and surge protected. That is the number one issue with routers. Power outages will easily mess with the wireless signal, make IP addresses go whack, or completely fry the fragile parts inside.
