Stock 4x4 Tacoma non-TRD. Which locker option may be best

    1996 Tacoma 4x4 Standard, Non-TRD.

    Rear locker: is it worth it to get an ARB or Find an axle with elocker and wire in?

    Pros and cons, and which years would work without having to modify leaf perches for a trd elocker? 96-04 Tacoma trd OR?

    Woah woah there man, I got some good ideas on the subject. Although, I’m still curious on others experiences and opinions about the setups for 1st gen Tacos.

    everybody builds theirs different depending on their needs although we also have the usual mall crawlers (not hating on you guys).

    Lol well thank you for not hating. I changed my question for a more direct response. Maybe you could give some advice on that situation. Wondering if going through all the hassle of modifying the current housing for an ARB would be better to go the factory way.

    I think it would be wise, 1st gen parts oem parts are getting hard to find.

    Look around for a drum to drum e-locker axle. I snagged one with wiring for $700. With a little bit of research its a simple swap.

    There are pros and cons to all. If you want to save money and can tolerate some quirky behavior an automatic locker like an Aussie or a Detroit can save you a lot of money over a selectable.

    If you think you'll want onboard air eventually the better ARB compressors can be used to fill tires and actuate the locker. ARBs can have issues with air leaks but that's usually due to a bad install and I've heard great things about ARBs customer service.

    In the Denver area a factory elocker axle is $1000+ so it's not necessarily the end all be all. I don't care much about tire wear so the rear of my truck is welded solid and I don't have any complaints and don't miss the quirky behavior of the Detroit lockers I've had in other vehicles.
