Never been to the ruby mountains, but am probably going through on my way to SLC this week. Any recommendations on camping? Something mellow, quiet, scenic etc. Not into the more developed places like KOA etc. Just something in a state park or national forest etc. Or maybe dispersed camping though I’ll be solo with my 5 yo, and he gets a little bored without other people around.

Did you get down there? I'm going to be headed that way late August. Wouldn't mind a camping tip if you have one.

I did. It’s a nice place. Felt a lot like the sierras, but at a lower elevation. And, I didn’t get a chance to do much exploring since I was solo with my 5 yo boy and headed to Utah without much leisure time, but I don’t think there’s much in the way of forest roads or dispersed camping. I think it is national forest though. Just a couple of semi-developed camp grounds. I stayed at the Thomas Canyon camp ground which was nice as far as they go. The River was full and moving fast and it runs right through the camp ground. There’d been a pretty big fire through it recently too.

There was a trail we hiked up a short distance. Maybe a mile or so. Looked like it could be really nice back pack trip if that’s your thing.

Reserved us a spot there. Taking my boys to Zion just before Labor Day, so we wont have much time for exploring either. I usually camp in the desert somewhere, but wanted to find something a little more mountain-y this time. Unfortunately wont be driving the Tacoma, we are taking my Mom's full size GMC for a more comfortable driving experience. Looks like a nice place, thanks for the tip. How much did the fire affect the campground?

Nice, I’m headed to southern Utah again in two weeks. It’ll be a nice and quiet solo trip.

The fire got into the campground in small patches. Not much affected there.
