Have rescued dogs for many, many years. Thinking at this point that I'd like to have what I want. Relatively short lifespan might line up. Looking for a companion dog; not interested in showing. Health seems to be the first criteria. If you have had one (or do now) what have been your experiences?

OK - maybe no one has one. I was thinking about the back-packs that these dogs sometimes carry and wondering if a small one with a six inch square slab of blue ice on each side (and water and collapsible bowl) might make things a bit better on a hike on a hot day. I used to carry the water myself, in a back-pack like device. But I'm most interested in the blue ice cooling the dog. Any thoughts?
