    4x4 newbie here:

So the engine will produce the same HP and torque. BUT RE GEARING it basically converted it on a tractor right? So the idle rpms are enough to make it capable of climbing a steep wall without using gas pedal?

That's @BigMike 's truck. He can give you the run down on how sweet this set up is for crawling.

Yes. You're just reducing the gearing waaaaay down, multiplying the amount of torque put on the ground. This way you won't need to throttle out and stress out your parts climbing up hills. It's better to be underpowered but overgeared instead of the other way around in terms of rock crawling.

For instance, look at Fred's rock crawler. No taco box but it lets the gearing do all the work.

580:1 is nothing compared to Marlins Old Toyota Hilux . He's somewhere near 1500:1 with a stacked t/case and stacked transmission set up

I used to Rock Crawl with Marlin in the early 90's and watching that old red Toyota crawl up steep waterfalls or sluices was awesome

My old M38A1 Jeep Rock Crawler was no match even though I was geared at 123:1 . We used to compete in Turtle races (slowest time) over a rocky course . My Jeep is a good Crawler but was no match for Marlin

My 1rst gear crawling ratio 123:1 was about the same speed as the vid I posted of Marlin crawling in 11th gear

I dont want a triple setup, but a 4.70:1 crawlbox would be nice giving me more choice on ratios, and a much better crawl ratio at Lo, Lo 4x4.. and with a locker int he rear would be almost unstoppable...

    3.91:1 axle x 2.67:1 transfer case x 3.60 trans = 37.5829:1 @idle 700 rpm 18.62 tire rotations per minute or 847.76 inches per minute on a stock sized 29" tire ( 29/2 * 3.14 = tire circumference)

    3.91:1 axle x 2.67:1 stock t-case x 4.70:1 crawlbox x 3.60 trans = 176.63:1 is 3.96 tire rotations per minute or 180.29 inches per minute on 29" tires

    4.88:1 axle x 2.67 x 4.70 x 3.60 = 220.46:1 IS 3.175 trpm or 164.4 inches per minute on a 33" tire... (33 / 2 * 3.14 = tire circumference)

    5.29 _______________________ = 238.98:1 is 2.929 trpm or 151.75 inches per minute on a 33" tire..

I think that would be the ideal setup for most everyone.. and they say they have driven this truck all around.. thousands of miles with no adverse wear, and similar fuel economy..
