Crank positioning sensor...

After a long battle with this 06 Tacoma not running at all , I changed out the crank sensor on this 4.0 , sure enough fired right up. After a day or 2 it started throwing crank positioning sensor code again and idle was rough, now it runs for a while and dies , takes some doing to get it started again only to repeat the same actions. Does anyone have any clue ? Computer brain? Cam sensor ? Bad crank sensor ? Help please. I'm at my witts end.

 

Post all of the codes you've pulled. Did you replace the CPS with a brand X version or factory?

It was a cheaper one from A1 auto parts online which had really good reviews. But yes, it was an after market cps. All the codes are saying CPS. thinking it might have been, I also replaced one of the cam sensors with an after market one also. Think I should go through and replace them with OEM product before I go any further trying to diagnose this ?

 

How are the wires to the CPS? Melted, cut, exposed?

Have you any wiring modifications on your truck, which may have tapped into that circuit?

 

OEM sensors only.

 

No mods, stock all the way. Never had any over heating issues. Never any issues at all until this

 

How about the VVTi sensor? Iirc, there were a few members here who had a few dirty VVTi sensors, and ran like crap until they cleaned/replaced them.

Its not actually toyota is it?

 

Over the years I've seen the Denso brand name on many Toyota sensors. Here's one for the '06 Tacoma 4.0L

Further down is a pointer to a Toyota Factory Service manual for 4/6 cyl 2nd Gen Tacoma's - do a FIND for "crankshaft position". You'll get hits for both the 1GR-FE(6 cyl) and 2TR-FE(4 cyl) engine. There's an ohm test you can perform. I would do this before condemning the 1AAUTO part. I mentioned after-market above because a lot of those that are electrical/electronic in nature are cheap Chinese junk. Can't speak from experience about 1AAUTO parts, but they have put together a lot of useful videos:
