What’s a good cam that records more than 10 seconds after? So for instance those lard asses had a good stand up game and I wanted to watch the rest of the fight lol. But seriously, can you have it record longer on either side of the impact ?

Sorry bro. Maybe just not as paranoid as you.
    This specific incident outlines why...
You gotta pay to get that dent fixed+the cost of a dash cam.
I would just have to pay for the dent.

Do me a favor and look up some statistics, then finish the calculation:
    1. Your chances of ever getting in an accident
    2. Your chances of ever getting in an accident where it was indeterminate who is at fault.
    3. Your chances (and you have to calculate this) of ever catching something on that dashcam that will prove who what where when why.

    Have fun with it tho!

why such negativity? I mostly do this as a hobby but even I have experienced situations where the dash cam proved who was at fault without a doubt. Yes there are times where witness testimony itself can be enough but having video proof means there is no he said she said nonsense which DOES happen a lot where the liability is split.

In this instance it may not have paid off but its a good show case of the technology. If someone had rear ended me while trying to parallel park then I would have their plate. Just check out blackvue or thinkwares blog, they love to show examples from customers where someone hit and ran their car in a parking lot and captured the plate. its very common. I captured a hit and run last winter, and using my footage they were able to find the lady who did it, and I was able to find the victim and her insurance used my footage to prove the hit and runner was 100% at fault and committed a hit and run. I saved that lady $500.

i put a dash cam in all my family members cars. within a few months my mother was rear ended into someone and the insurance of the car she was pushed came after her because they wanted each person to pay for the car in front of them. Dash cam proved that she was stopped so they couldn't split the liability that way and she paid zero cents. a dash cam under $100 saved her hundreds. I have been lucky enough that I haven't needed it, but I am glad I was able to save other innocent people hundreds of dollars.

i have seen countless, and I mean countless dash cam videos from the US where people get into accidents and the dash cam proves the other driver was 100% at fault where it would other wise likely be split liability because its he said she said. just check www.reddit.com/r/roadcam. There have been many incidences of insurance fraud caught on dash cam, insurance fraud is more common than people think. one tactic is people at a red light will reverse into you, then claim you rear ended them. Without a dash cam the victim always ends up paying for it. I have seen many videos of this insurance fraud caught on video.

heres one from not too long ago where the woman driver claims she made a complete stop and that cammer was traveling at a high rate of speed and t boned her, cammer sends it to her insurance and 30 min later they accept 100% liability because the woman lied:

this cam would keep recording because of the motion detection, unfortunately since I checked it 5 days later, the motion detection footage was already over written. you can partition specific amount for different file types. the motion and impact detection saves to different folders.

I was just too slow to notice, so that was bad on my part.

likely, but its a small town, I know people who live on that block, i know several people who work there. I'm not getting my hopes up and not expecting to find her but you never know.

Regardless, its a good show case in how the technology works.

heres a recent example from thinkware that did lead to arrests:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSUHJ8teE0U

"A Thinkware F750 user has captured the moment when two individuals illegally gained access to a secured parking lot and broke into four vehicles while committing theft, causing thousands of dollars of damage. The entire duration of the event was captured on Parking Surveillance Mode.

The suspects were quickly identified and apprehended after the video evidence was reviewed by the police. The incident happened in Vancouver, Canada. "

My point is probability and statistics. You say you have watched "countless" videos and I believe you have watched quite a few. But just to show you how insignificant that "countless" number is, you could watch a unique video every second of every minute of every hour of every day for almost five years before you cycled through the drivers driving TODAY, July 1, 2019. Then it would take you five more years to watch the videos of people driving tomorrow.
My point is the probability of you ever being in a situation where a dashcam is needed is less than you getting struck by lightning... while driving! And the chances of you actually getting the right data from the dashcam if you were in that situation? Well, you probably have higher odds of winning the lottery, or discovering a new planet. That's my point. No negativity, just being realistic.

just your tone of that post was just pretty snarky.

Anyways, I just told you of two incidents where a dash cam saved a family member, and someone else hundreds of dollars. so you can think the odds are so low, but a $50-400 camera is a small price for a little extra insurance. that's all it is, extra insurance. most people pay $500-1000+ a year on insurance already whats another $50 for a basic dash cam, or $300-400 for an advanced one? Since I have been into dash cams I have known several people whos cares were hit and ran in parking lots and suddenly NOW they realize why I have mine, and guess what? now they have them too but it was too late for them because most people think it won't happen to them. there are over 5 million car crashes a year, many end up with liability split because how often its he said she said.

I just witnessed a hit and run last week in my work parking lot, i chased after the woman and she admitted it at first but now is denying it. the car she hit got some slight damage but they arent sure how bad yet underneath. Waiting to see if my eyewitness testimony will be enough, because the lady who did it is denying it ever happened now. If the victim had a cam like me, there would be no question about it and we wouldn't have to be doing this back and forth bullshit. I hope my witness testimony will be enough, the victims son is apparently going through some health issues so she hasn't gotten the car inspected yet.

What I don't like about dash camera people is they all think they're going to be YouTube and that their benign video is going to be a viral sensation

lol it takes something very very amazing for a dash cam video to go viral. like the Russian meteor videos, or the time that motorcycler rear ended a car and did a flip and landed on his feet on the roof. even really big crash videos often only get a few thousand views.

It proved that it was vandalism, and not some random shit that the owner did and tried to file a fake claim...thus keeping his insurance rates the same. If (and I understand this is a big IF) he gets her identified, then he saves his deductible. So, just by showing it wasn't his fault he is saving money every month, so the camera is now paying for itself (in small increments, but it's saving him money).

I use the Viofo V119A dual, and like it, have captured a few dumbasses performing their dumbassery such as cutting me off in traffic then slamming on the brakes. I reach up to my camera, hit a button, and it saves the incident. Usually when someone sees me reaching for my camera, they think I am pointing at it and go do their stupid tricks elsewhere.

My wife was in 2 very serious collisions in different vehicles. One of which she had dashcam. She was at a stoplight that lost power. She stopped, waited for other vehicles, then when it was her turn, started to go across the intersection. Got T-boned by another car. The lady claimed that the light was working until my wife told the trooper to make sure that someone got her dashcam out of the car before it got towed away. Lady's story changed right after she saw the dashcam footage. Insurance liked it too. Well, ours did at least...I don't think the other insurance company is too happy with the checks they will end up writing. And, sure, it didn't get her hitting the car, as it was on the side. But it did get the footage of everyone stopping like they're supposed to, it showed the light not being functional, and it showed the lady's car while my wife was in her 360 degree spin (for an instant). So dashcam saved us a lot of money as well. Once the lawyer gets done and presents the dam

Understood. I know a lot of people who have won small amounts in the lottery but that does not make me play the lottery. My point is it just probability, unless... you are the type of person who enjoys chasing that kind of stuff. I have witnessed wrecks before and given my statement to the police, but I don't actively look for incidents.

Never used a dash cam. Hope you find the person. I do have a pretty compact superzoom Sony hybrid digital camera on me at all times. You never know what you'll see and the far reach is amazing. I live way out in nowhereville now so not much excitement. Good luck op

Yea, I get what you mean, but for me it started as a delivery driver in college having many close calls and one bad incident. my first accident someone made a left turn in front of me while i was going through a green. it went back and forth for over a month because they refused to take full liability even though I had a witness and she was ticketed for failing to yield. they kept trying to claim I could have avoided it, which was not true. Eventually they finally gave in after my insurance took them to court over it basically and with all the evidence on my side they gave in. No a dash cam wasn't necessary in the end, but it would have saved so much time and effort if i just had video showing exactly what happened. So that was when I started considering dash cams, shortly after that dash cams still were shitty quality and expensive so i was using a sony cybershot camera i already owned while delivering but it was a pain in the ass because i had to manually turn it on each time and delete footage every day. I had many close calls of oblivious "follow the leader' type drivers running stale red lights and such.

And while I do enjoy dash cams as a hobby now, I sure as hell don't enjoy being in accidents lol. I don't want the headaches of dealing with insurance or liars anymore.

yea people are assholes. the summer before i finally got a real dash cam i was still delivering for dominos. i came up behind a guy at a red light, stopped like normal. when the light turned green he started accelerating then he suddenly slammed on his brakes. I was confused at first but then he did it again, started going then slammed on his brakes. there was actually two lanes so i just went around him. since I had a dominos topper on my car he called the store and claimed I almost rear ended him and he wanted free food. luckily my manager took my word for it, but I really wish I had that asshole on video clearly trying to commit insurance fraud.

Another driver rear ended someone in a similar incident where they were going 30 mph through a green light and the car in front of her (according to my coworker) slammed on their brakes for no reason. Granted I gotta take her word for it, its not uncommon to happen. Either way it ends up being her fault since she couldn't stop in time but at least with a dash cam you can see if someone is committing fraud trying to get into an accident.

few years ago some guy on www.reddit.com/r/roadcam posted several videos where he got into accidents that he could have avoided. In one someone tries to make a late exit when he's in the exit lane. sure the person trying to make a dangerous late exit is an asshole, but if you can avoid a collision you are required to, and this guy seriously pits the car. it was very very obvious he did it on purpose and could have avoided it. Last we saw this guy literally went to jail because his dash cam videos he uploaded convinced the police he has been getting into accidents on purpose hahah. some of the accidents were pretty bad too, he flipped the late exiter onto their side.

it's all good, i enjoy talking about my experiences and what not. Happy people can find my info useful.
