Better to report or just fix?
Seems like they'll take any excuse to close a trail nowadays. Not sure if it's a good idea to give them more :notsure:

Using a bypass is a good way to get a trail closed.

Looking back at the original Trail Report they must be talking about Webster Pass, no way a CrossTek is making it over that first obstacle on Red Cone. Plus, open how far?, right at the pass (Coming down from Red Cone) usually has a huge snow drift that always makes it a late opening trail, I expect that is still blocking the North side of Webster.

Out there they understand the Revenue 4x4 trails bring to areas, Our side is on the tree hugger side. (not that I don't like to hug a nice big Oak, but some snicker)

Definitely shouldn't be, but people decided there should be >_< Some big rocks hiding in the snow there too, someone's going to find one and make a mess of things when they pierce their oil pan or some such.

Yeah, wasn't sure about how to handle this :-(

Also, looks like some serious snow melt age needs to happen before the south side of Webster is open:

So where about is this Avalanche and new bypass?

Were you coming south from Montezuma? Or North from Hall Valley Rd?

    First avy (with the bypass):
    N 39°30'23.428'' W 105°49'6.049''
Second avy (just some snow you have to cross, would give a truck some trouble, SxS were crossing it without too much trouble):
    N 39°30'42.185'' W 105°49'18.165''

Came in from the Hall Valley side, yeah.

On the topic, what are folks' recommendations for a modest chainsaw? I live in suburbia, so I don't need one every other week, so it'll have to deal well with not being used for 3-6 months at a time. Don't figure I'll ever be cutting anything much over 12".

I wouldn't get anything smaller than 40cc and 16" bar. You'll end up stuck behind a downed tree bigger than 12" at some point.

I'm partial to Husqvarna, but Stihl is good too. They're worth the extra money over the cheap brands.

I'm not going to rely on a battery powered chainsaw to get me off the trail. :tinfoilhat:

Also, while we're on the subject. If you want something for emergencies to keep in your truck and don't want to deal with a chainsaw, ditch the EAF fiskars axe and get one of these, or a silky big boy.

I carry one of these every time I ride the dirtbike, and have cut some surprisingly large trees with them. It takes a little effort, but you can get through most any downed tree you'll come across in this state.

I love log hopping, but that's certainly not possible on every log I come across.

And unfortunately, a lot of trail users will choose to go around anyways.
