It should lock up in 4th if the engine load isnt too high. I havent had a chance but @nd4spdbh has adjusted shift points to acommodate this problem i believe

Simple switch to interrupt the yaw sensor. On/off at the push of a button. This way off is truly OFF. Best of both worlds. (Off topic indeed)

That would sell me on it if the shift points can manipulated not only under normal driving but cruise control as well. If the logic for cruise control could be played with to make it react sooner that would be awesome too!

The ecu uses the same control in cruise as non-cruise. Cant change the cruise ecu though

Ahhhh trans tuning! Wall of text... im sorry, it gets me excited.

So first off, the trans gets "one tune" for shift points and torque converter (there are actually 4 shift point sections - normal, normal fault, 4low, 4low fault, as well as what i will call 3 lock up clutch sections - normal, normal hot, normal hot d3/d2, which is funny because in limp mode the trans has the ability to lock 2nd and 3rd gear.... only 3rd is actually tuned to do so but i would ABSOLUTELY LOVE the ability to tune in a 3rd lockup scenario under normal non limp mode, but i digress....) really the only ones needed to be messed with is "normal" as the normal sections for both TCC and Shift scheduling is what is used under 2wd/4hi non limp mode driving... aka 99% of the time unless you overheat the trans or are in 4low.

Needless to say, being in cruise control or not has no change on how the trans will shift due to "accelerator pedal" input. Now what I do not know is if the ecu simulates a throttle input based on the accelerator pedal curve or if cruise control has a different curve, this will change things how as to how the trans will shift in relation to speed if there are two curves because the accelerator pedal curve could be more aggressive (giving the motor more actual throttle plate angle) vs the cruise control curve. However, I believe and assume that both cruise control and accelerator pedal use the same curve (it would make sense given how everything regarding shifting/tcc is based off accelerator pedal input).

So yes, changing shift points and tcc lockup/release points will absolutely help in cruise control situations. My latest public trans tune - which is my 9th major revision - posted here (hit me up if you want me to put it in your tune file for you) has definitely helped me out for situations you described. BUUUUUT, it does not and will NEVER fix the issues you describe as cruise control and its logic is inherently flawed on our trucks and unfortunately is not something we can tune (as its not within the ecu). The problem with cruise control logic is its slow to react, then over reacts creating the hunting you describe. It has to apply way to much throttle to get back to target speed, blowing by said target speed due to downshift then lets up off the throttle way to much, dropping past target speed, and the whole process starts over again. To stop this, I will often pop into 4th well before load increases due to a hill and allow the truck to get into 4th lockup while cruise is on, and it will chug right up the hill without unlocking or downshifting. Again, shift point and accelerator pedal curve changes have definitely helped this hunting in normal driving and within cruise control.

I am currently working on my 10th iteration of "ND4's auto trans tuning" wherein I get even more aggressive with holding onto lockup in 5th (im talking to not release TCC for 11-15mph later than stock, 9th iteration was around 7-8mph), paired with a slight change to the 5 to 4 downshift to make it to where a situation where you are in 5th gear and pop out of lockup is short and much extra throttle puts you into 4th gear where you likely just need to be in the first place. It will all come out in the excel doc once I finalize the 10th revision. But for example, @ 45% accelerator pedal input, stock there was a 1400 driveshaft rpm difference between release of the torque converter and actual downshift to 4th. @45% in my 9th revision it was 1100 ds rpm, currently in my 10th revision its down to ~500 ds rpm.

Anyways, I could ramble on about trans tuning for quite some time, and without any direction as far as specific questions even more so HAHA, so for now ill leave it there. Absolutely DO NOT HESITATE to tag me, quote me, pm me questions. I love this tech talk.

PS: 10th revision of trans tuning I have started playing with gear pressures as well, and i have made some ACIS changes based on logging that i have seen for us NA guys.:D

Glad to see you are still at it! I haven’t had time to go out on my own, but your version 10 sounds about like what I was thinking after running your version 9. I’m still much happier than I’ve ever been with the shifting, so it’s taken a backseat to other things at this point. If you need a second opinion, I’ll be glad to test whatever you come up with.

OH SWEET! Didnt know you had been running my "revision 9" glad to hear you like it. If you wanted to try the main changes in my "revision 10" the current beta changes are:

5th TCC release (difference values from stock)
    • 0 & 16 % boxes = -450
    • 32 & 42 % boxes = -600
5 to 4 shift (difference values from stock)
    • 45 % = +300
    • 50 % = +200
    • 55 % = +100
Yes positive (earlier) downshift values on the 5 to 4 to get rid of a weird dip in the stock curve. This brings the 5 to 4 downshift up a bit in that area getting it closer to when the tcc releases so less time is spent in 5th unlock before downshifting to 4th.

I’m pretty sure I’m running “9”, if that was the last one you posted. I grabbed your nice cheat sheet and plugged them in real quick. I like your thought process in the changes, I may fire up the computer and do a flash real quick.

Awesome. Like stated currently working on "version 10" (literally as we speak....im uh... "working"). Im going to try those above changes as well as the following after looking at graphs and logs.

4th Tcc Release (difference values from stock)
    • 0 % = -300
    • 26 % = -300
    • 40 % = -600

At this point, upshift shift points will likely not change as I have been very pleased with them, and lower speed hunting between 3rd and 2nd was resolved a good amount by dropping the 3 to 2 downshift. Revision 10 changes are due to a longer higher speed (68-75mph for 700ish miles) last weekend, where I realized id like things to hold a lil longer. These might possibly be a bit too aggressive, but only one way to find out!

Very nice work. You make it too easy when all I have to do is flash. I’m gonna run everything from the first post tomorrow, I’m flashing the truck as I type, and I’ll report back.

Dude!!! I like the way you nerd out!!!! Takes a special person to enjoy transmission logic, in a good way!

I am wanting one for these HPTuners really bad now! Maybe Santa (wifey) will get me one after my deployment in a few months....

So basically the cruise control is a separate control module or a non accessible portion of the ECM/TCM?

Do you have to have the HTP Pro? Or is the standard one fine?

I'm just excited that we have this ability now haha!

And yes, cruise control logic is apparently housed within the abs/vsc/traction control ecu, so alas we can't tell it to lay off the suds and take a line of coke to wake the hell up hahaha.

Just the standard MPVI2 with 4 credits!

Good to hear! So to upload a tune you need to buy a credit?

I have a couple local speed junkie buddies that tune (mostly just LSx vehicle, but same programing) with HPT but I haven't asked them anything because they'll expect me to but one right now...then I'll give in to peer pressure...then the wife will b****h at me...then I'll be in the dog house...and such is life. haha

Correct, you need 4 credits to push the tune to the truck.

Also, wifey doesnt have to know. Have your speed junkie buddy buy it, and float him some cash... or favors.
