I'm learning I need to attack this from a different angle now that the sound stopped.
I didn't know knock sensor probs were common on 1MZs but I bet that's what I'm having. Anyone have any experience with a sensor not working at all and letting an engine knock?

Timing belt w/p done at 145K miles now at 160K miles

another vid. noise starts at idle, gets louder 'til 1800 rpm, goes quiet thens returns with fury at 2200 rpm. Will rev to redline w/o blowing up nor is it down on power.

BTW...that is NOT an exhaust leak in video, that is a very fast rattle.

The door slamming sound when you chop the throttle is not audible *to my ears anyway* but leads me back towards the tensioner.

This vehicle doesn't have a serpentine belt so the only tensioner is on the timing belt.

This is weird. Sounds like it could strand me though. One of the bad things of depending on a 20 yr. old as a daily is prob.s like this. Dealership would be scratching their butts thinking too.

Yes same type valve train as Taco trucks. Aluminum block and heads built to 3.0L but same old toyota.

EVERYTHING timing wise and water pump was changed 15K miles ago when I heard the noise then. (fainter version) * I thought it was tensioner then*

Yes, came on overnight (and left while I was listening with stethoscope jiggling wires up top (injectors, coils, MAIN LOOM AND MAY HAVE JIGGLED KNOCK SENSOR WIRING)

I looked at your thrust problem and got to wondering though expecially since the Alt. belt threw itself last week for no good reason. It too had 15K miles.

I don't know whether to pull the pan or the intake. Never have heard a engine uncontrollably knock from sensors being loosely plugged.

edit: Now with noise *fixing* itself, it revs quiet and easy to 6K in neutral, like a good Toyo. in fine shape but I know it will be back. I just don't want to be 100 miles from home when it happens. Driving Taco. again for a while.

    yea, 'til Dec.

Alt. belt was off in vids, Pwr. Str. was still on.

I guess first I'll pull back off intake and just replace the knock wires and test sensors.

I was just going to slip a new timing tensioner in from bootom but I think i'll do that last.

next would be to look at rods. *your rods didn't sound bad one day and good the next though did they? I'm not familiar with a thrust washe prob. on Toyo.

It was common on old Chevies and did that 'chunk' chunck' sound when chopping throttle......I dunno.

I always thought a 300 code would set for knock sensors though.

EVEN IF THEY GOT A KNOCK FROM AN INTERNAL SOURCE.....like a bearing.

This is when i say i always get weird problems but 20 yr. old vehicles are what get weird problems.

    For posterity.

It was the timing belt tensioner.

20K miles old (factory bagged from EBAY but had to have been a counterfeit, I THINK) and was stuck retracted all the way. AND TIMING NEVER SLIPPED!!

Easy to slip a new one in and sounded great again.
