I had my 10,000 service check today. I also told the service manager that my Tacoma shifts between 1st & 2nd gear delayed and hard. This model is automatic. They charged me $65 for diagnostic check which I was surprised; I thought it was in warranty. East Madison Toyota told me the repair is under warranty, not the diagnostic. Is that correct? All they did is changed the computer program.

    Regards. New Tacoma Owner

I can't speak for american dealers but diag on a complaint in warranty should not be charged unless it's caused by neglect or abuse. (mud etc...)

    Phone Toyota Corporate.

Welcome to TW... There would be no diagnostic test needed if you weren’t having issues, keep on them. Most dealerships suck ass!!!

    Welcome,

Here is the skinny on diag charges.

If you request the dealer to look into an issue and they find none, you pay the diag charge as it is time the tech burned looking for a problem.

Now, if the diag is done and a problem is found then it becomes a warranty pay and you are free and clear minus any fluids or supplies NOT covered on the warranty.

IE battery issue, batt is found to be bad, warranty on the battery, in the process of diag they find the oil is low, you will be charged accordingly since it is a different system.

Diag fees are never warranty unless a warrantable issue is found.

This is standard and approved (by statute) in the industry, from dealers and independents.

At least it was only 65. Majority are over 100 per labor hour.

After 20+ years as a mechanic and plenty of time in court over disputes, it is always the same result, customer pays diag fee unless a warranty issue is found.

Toyota corporate is going to tell you the same.
Us mechanics would never get paid for our time if everything was warranty.
