meet my 2004 Toyota Tacoma. she's got the TRD package, V6 engine, 5 speed manual, and a beautiful Radiant Red Paint job. she's my second tacoma, i had a white 1999 4x4 2.7l xtra-cab. i loved that truck but i wasn't a fan of how underpowered that 4 banger was or the stiff gearing (3.58) that she came stock with. so rather than regear or engine swap the old white one, i sold it, and bought this one:thumbsup:. i bought her from the original owner.

Mileage when I bought her on 7/1/2019: 155k(ish)
Mileage when sold in Feb. 2023: 199k(ish)

if you're looking for some pics of the truck in previous stages of the build they are dispersed throughout the thread.

and also as a side note, these are the main build threads that have inspired me in some way or another. i figure i ought to give credit where credit is due and very few of these ideas are exclusively my own:

oh yeah, and i changed the name of the thread as of 5/1/2020 (in case anyone's confused). The original name "2004 Tacoma TRD Build" sounded a bit generic:D... so i threw in my nickname that all my hockey buddies call me, "Raz," to make it mine.

So, you’re plan on getting a CBI rear bumper with swing out tire carrier and also a 4X rear bumper but you’re not sure about the swing out tire carrier?? I’ve been torn on the rear bumpers as well. I like the CBI but don’t want to spend nearly 3 grand on a CBI bumper with swing out but I also am hesitant on the 4X rear bumper because of the wait times.

I was about to come in with a bunch of ideas and suggestions. But I see youve done your homework.

sorry, the two bumpers was a typo; has been fixed in original post. i think that i am going with the 4X Innovations bumper for three reasons.
1- it's got lines that mesh very well with the truck and it looks semi-stock, and
2- the rear tire carrier opens to the passenger side which i far prefer to the drivers side (hinges wise).
3- it's got a DOT Class III certified hitch.

i figure that i can deal with a waiting period if the end product is exactly what i want. BUY ONCE CRY ONCE (disregarding this is how i ended up with a 99' 4 banger, selling it, and then buying this new one).

i am unsure about the rear tire carrier because i really like the look without it and the reason that i have a truck is to be able to haul things when i need to. the rear swing out kind of makes this difficult. especially when hauling oversize loads. i'd love to be able to stuff a 33" tall spare underneath but it's looking like i wont be able to do that without modification to the frame. overall the frame is one of those things that i don't like to mess with. welded sliders and stuff of that nature is as far as i'll go. that being said, i am not opposed to the swing out. my current idea is to buy one with it but just leave it off until i need it. we'll also see how i end up using the truck. for now, i think that a rear bumper is a long ways out. the stock ones are plenty stout anyways and i can use the hitch as a recovery point.

The only thing that popped out to me was the weathertech liners. They dont make the custom fit mats for 1st gens. But Husky liners do and they look really good.

Also, have you considered building your own armor?

WeatherTech does make them for the 1st gens, they're only available under the 2004 model year though. they fit all first gens i believe. i was planning on getting a set for my 99' but, as mentioned earlier, i ended up selling it.

i've thought about building my own armor. mainly sliders. for the front bumper i've had my heart set on an ARB for a while so i think i'll stick with that, but i've gone on and off about whether or not to do a rear. i do have a welder and access to a pretty world class shop during the school year but the problem with doing it at school is that my teacher has nixed welding on vehicle frames (a buddy of mine tried). it's defidently possible, but when i factor in my time and effort i still come back to..."will it be worth just buying them and saving my self the PITA?" i have found that when you work hard and get motivated $300-$500 isnt that much. money from side gigs adds up quick if you save it and work multiple hours at a time. i'd estimate that a shop would take 2hrs max to weld on sliders. when i do sliders, whether or not i build them myself, i'll have a shop weld them on for me. someone else to blame when it goes wrong.:D

sweet. looks like i should be able to fit it w/o the bumper as well so for now i think that's what i'll do. the 4X Innovations bumper has definitely made the list. if i do buy one and don't end up building one then that seems to be the direction that i will go (at least for now).

I totally know what you mean about wanting to haul things. I currently have my spare tire (285/75/16) in my bed with a ratchet strap and I feel like it takes up a ton of room in the short bed. That’s honestly why I want a swing out. And I don’t really want it under the bed either. Mainly because my spare tire winch is a PITA. Lol. Great points about the 4X bumper though. 4X makes a nice set of sliders too. Just what ever brand you go with for sliders, make sure you get the kick out option. Can’t tell you how many times the kick out has saved me.

good to know on the sliders, i'll look into those. tomorrow after work i'm going to head up to MULE Expedition Outfitters in Issaquah Wa. they're the guys who did all the work on my '99 and i'm gonna try and get some suggestions from them as well as a quote on suspension. i you're ever in the seattle area i'd highly recommend that you stop by. great people

i was thinkin' that the kick out would be a great side step as well for getting into the bed or for reaching stuff on the roof rack once i get one. that was my main thought on that but i suppose that the protection difference would be pretty substantial too.

    Update 7/2/19:
went out this morning to run some errands and, the truck wouldn't go into any gear. period.
after a few calls to shops and some research i figured out that it was the clutch master and/or slave cylinders. finally i got the clutch to release so it's drivable for the moment. i have an appointment with a shop to do the work on Friday. kinda bummed that this happened literally the day after i bought the truck:(. but it could be worse, at least it's not a new clutch:D

Is it still on the original clutch? 155k miles is a good run for a clutch but I wouldn't be surprised if it's near the end of it's lifespan. Some trucks get a lot more out of them but I think the 4x4's clutches tend to not last as long (since they usually see more heavy use). Really depends on the truck's history and how the previous owner drove it though

I had a horrible experience getting the clutch replaced on my 04 a few years ago, not looking forward to going through that again (shop installed it backwards). Definitely go to a mechanic you trust for manual transmission work
