The 'great fire wall of China' blocks lots of stuff. And they try to disrupt VPNs as well.

We have T Mobile which is a partner with China, so texting / calls apparently works fine on their normal plan. And while I don't need most of the internet, I do need email while we are gone.

I have set up a Yahoo email since everything indicates that that works for some reason. But I'd still consider a VPN to give me more access, assuming there is a quality item.

Two I'm considering are TunnelBear and ExpressVPN.

    Other recommendations?

I’m using Betternet right now on my iPhone. There’s probably an android version. Google and gmail work fine.

Where in China are you going? I’m mostly in Suzhou and Shanghai, but I’m between Jinhau, Wu Xi and Ningbo at the moment. The Chinese countryside is beautiful.

Trip was great. Saw lots of highlights and memorable things. Met some great locals and shared some great meals. All the reasons we enjoy travel.

As a TMobile customer, we connected to China Mobile no issue. Never tried any Wifi, as it's much more 'controlled'. Apparently they don't worry about cellular with a US number, because nothing we had was restricted or choked. We even were able to read and esign paperwork on the phone, in the Beijing airport, for a house that sold while we were gone. The buyers were thrilled rather than waiting for our return.

Awesome. I’m on my 4th trip here. I only come here for work so I don’t get to sightsee a lot. It is a colorful place though.

You really need to plan a bit of extension of your time and do some sightseeing. It would be worth the effort.
