So I have a 2007 2.7L tacoma. (gotta love those 4 bangers, runs like a champ) Next May, I plan on hitting the road for a 6 month trip. I'm pricing out a trailer that weighs less than 1500 pounds and don't plan to load it much while traveling. Like I said, I'm in Cali and I'm forced to have my truck pretty much stock. Any insight or suggestions on if my truck will hang?

20160525_084913.jpg 20160603_125411.jpg Have spent the last 5 summers out with a 4x6 cargo trailer that I upgraded to an off-road. Converted it before the third season. GVW is at #2,000 for the trailer. I do a lot 4th gear and when crossing summits I’ll gear down and do 3,000rpm in what ever gear is possible. Just don’t be in a hurry.

This was the start of '17 and was heavily loaded in Oregon headed for Boise. I'm finally adding air bags to level out my odd loadings. I'm carrying full iron all around and a winch. 2 1/2" lift, 6112/5160. My spare fits the trailer. +160K on the original clutch. Alaska summer '20.

Thanks Rounder, how were the elevation gains? What engine mods?

Billstines with 885 coils 2”aal Lce header, pro dry drop in filter, charcoal filter removal, light bar in grill, ditch lights, yaesu dual band radio, and a bunch of other junk
I tow a camper often. It’s an aliner style. It does fine just don’t be in a hurry going up hill. As far as mods go I have a lce header, charcoal filter delete, afe pro dry, and Dobson snorkle.

Like I said slow, my down shift point 2,500rpm and can push to 4,000. At the high end you can do it in short burst, but you might drop a rod eventually. 3,000rpm seems a safer pulling cruze/climb engine speed. I would transit the continental divided several times each summer. I travel to establish a base camp and do a lot of day trips. The trailer is not hooked up 24/7, just when I change base camp location, like another river.

Thanks for the input, planning to buy a Rockwood 1640ltd tent trailer, UVW 1465 lbs, hitch weight 162 lbs and wanted to make sure I'm not crazy for considering it with this truck. Driven it loaded going camping before many times with no issues, but never taken the stick shift with a trailer. Obviously I'll change the clutch and give it the mother of all tune ups before hitting the road.
