OP I wouldn't stress about it. When the situation arises, toss it in 4HI. No need to get 10 miles a month, that's just some arbitrary number. It's so someone with a 10 year old truck who's never engaged 4x4 doesn't bitch to Toyota that the one time they go to engage it, it doesn't work.

 

Would this also apply also for 4 lo or does running 4 hi lube it properly ?

It truly doesn’t matter imo. I bought my truck when it was 12 years old, 168k miles on it, and I’d bet you 4wd was never used. The damn thing still has original spark plugs in it for crying out loud.

4wd engaged so smoothly I thought it wasn’t working at first.

Slick rock in Moab has a much higher coefficient of friction than pavement. Point is, tires will scrub long before the CV joints or transfer case grenades.
Unless... you do something stupid, like doughnuts on dry pavement in 4hi or put it in 4HI, put the wheel against the stops, tach it to 5K and shift into D.
The truck is designed for abuse, not stupidity.
