Starter issues, need help

Do you think a fuel filter change and fuel system cleaner could help? Or do you think it's the fuel pump? Because like I said sometimes it starts instantly, and sometimes it cranks for really long or doesn't even start on the first try.

 

Oh if it cranks every time buy cranks long, then it likely won't be issue with contacts in solenoid. I guess I misunderstood.

 

Well i replaced them anyways so hopefully I won't have the issue with the plunger getting stuck. I really want to know what it is that makes my truck crank for so long before starting though.

 

Since (or when) you have the starter out of the truck, replace the plunger. The one in the photo doesn't look too good to me, and I'd gladly spend a few more $$ than wait until it goes out.

 

Start with that first, if it's not that then you may need get the fuel pump looked at.

 

lots of people have spent lots of time and $ chasing this to no avail, if it takes 5 seconds of cranking before it starts then there is a problem 1 to 2 seconds of cranking I would just live with it. The fuel pumps on Tacomas do not start to operate unless the motor is being turned over by either the starter or running, there is no prime like other automobiles.

 

Try cycling the ignition a few times without cranking, then try starting. This will help prime the fuel system. May help to figure out if it’s fuel related.

when I had mine replaced they said it was failing pressure test. I didn't believe them at first, but it fixed the issue.

 

there is supposed to be a check ball/valve in the pump assembly to hold pressure. I have seen where the hose that connects the pump to the output line actually swells, it has been immersed in fuel for 20 years, and looses integrity, eventually stranding you. The shop says you need a new pump assembly when all you need is a new connection hose BUT the the wiper for the level sensor is 20 years old too and it usually goes out shortly after that. poop happens.

 

Okay, my fuel filter gets in later tonight so I'll be doing it tomorrow morning.

 

Yup more than 5 seconds or doesn't even start on the first try sometimes, and then sometimes in 1 second so it's confusing.

 

5 seconds is too long... there is no easy way to tap into the pressure side of the fuel system to see if she is bleeding pressure off, which is where I would start. If you dont have the testing tools or the knowledge dont throw parts at it in desperation, it usually doesnt solve anything.

 

Okay, so I know it's been a while but here's what I've done. I guess there were more problems with the starter than I thought and I decided to just get a remanufactured denso starter from napa. It starts really nicely, and a lot quicker than my old one. But I noticed a sound that I hadn't heard before. I don't know if I'm dumb and just hadn't noticed it before but I wanted to come here and ask to make sure. There's like a consistent sound that seems to be coming from the starter when the truck is on and when I turn it off it sounds like something stops spinning. First thing I thought about was the starter wheel staying in and spinning with the flywheel. Idk, hopefully you guys can just tell me I'm crazy. could be dry bearings on a pulley somewhere. You can hear the starter stops engaging shortly after the engine starts.

 

Okay thanks, now that I remember the belt had been screeching a little like 2 weeks ago when I would first turn on the truck so I just sprayed some wd40 on it and it hasn't since. Maybe that was also a sign?

 

FWIW the video sounds very similar to how much truck runs. I wouldn't worry about it.

 

Yeah it's been forever. So did the long crank issue get resolved? How is the starting problem?

 

Yeah sorry I went on a trip and had the truck sitting for a while. But I replaced the fuel filter, air filter, the contacts and used the fuel system cleaner and it cranked the same and would continue to get stuck. With the new starter so far it has cranked an appropriate amount so I think that's what it was.

 

You had better experience that I just did with my starter issues. The starter hesitated to turn a few times so i got the battery tested at O'reilys and Autozone both came back with a bad battery. Replaced the battery and it died the next day, replaced the alternator after testing it with a reman Denso unit as well. The starter kept hesitating so I bought an o'reilly brand Ultima starter rated at 1.8Kw. installed the new starter and that thing takes 6-8 turns to start the engine. I replaced the starter relay and no difference. Did I get a faulty starter or is there some other thing that can cause this happen.
