My neighbor called to report his 98 3.4L 4x4 wouldn't start or stay running. Symptoms were no fuel pressure. He disconnected the fuel line from the tank to the filter. Put on a line to a bucket. Tried to start the truck and no fuel pressure. Damn. Must be a bad fuel pump.

Next, he got into the bed and jumped up and down to shake the fuel tank. That shook whatever was obstructing the fuel flow lose and it started running again. If there is a sock on the fuel line, it must need some cleaning. We're going to hook up some compressed air to the fuel line to backflush the line into the tank then see how it goes.

Had it been sitting for a long time? Sounds like maybe the tank needs to be emptied and cleaned if it's got a lot of crud in it

It has been sitting. Also, it was an oil field truck from TX that probably has a lot of crud in the tank. It should be removed and cleaned.

1st gen pumps "usually" work or not. Brushes/commutators wear, connections fail and they quit.
Irritating them with blows to the tank frequently can get them going but the writing is on the wall.
The OE sock was more of a fine nylon screen. The service replacements are closer to deluxe quilted Downey. Asin aftermarket to the rescue again for a complete pump/sock/grommet/hose/clamp kit for less than $100.
In any case if there was enough contaminates in the tank to "plug" the sock/pump I should think it's time to have a look inside.
Keep in mind there are two check valves in the pump. One for "anti drain-back".

I think he's going to make an access door (like Chevy truck guys) in the bed so he can easily get to the fuel pump.
