I had been searching for a proper bed rack for about a year now. Everything that I saw was either wildly expensive or a ladder rack (i.e. - not cool). Ultimately, my wife was the one who pushed me to make a decision after she gave me the green light to buy a RTT in exchange for a family camping road trip to Michigan’s UP for yet another wedding.

[Note: Send your kids to in-state schools so their future spouses won’t be required to cross the country multiple times a year to attend weddings for people they do not know.]

Through TacomaWorld, I found @HMOR_Tim at Heavy Metal Off Road in CA. I gave him a call on Friday afternoon to discuss product availability and shipping time. He said that he was making a batch of racks that weekend and would have them out the door by Monday afternoon. As promised, I received a UPS tracking number on Monday and UPS Ground was at my door exactly a week later.

HMOR’s racks do not come with a paint or powder coating option. Of course, powder coating has huge advantages but, IMO, a rattle can job is perfectly OK for a trail truck so long as you properly prep the surface. With that in mind, I was sure to wash with soapy (Dawn) water, clean with acetone, prime and sand twice, then rattle can it with short bursts and frequent mixing. The whole process only takes a couple of hours to complete and a day to fully cure.

Overall, Tim’s craftsmanship and service has been fantastic! His site is super user-friendly, the price is fantastic, order fulfillment is quick, and the finished product will last for years of heavy trail use. I could not be happier! If the day ever arrives when I convince my wife that rock sliders are absolutely necessary for a cross-country wedding, @HMOR_Tim at Heavy Metal Off Road will be the first person I call.

Nice, they’re the cheapest one piece bed bars I’ve seen. How much was shipping?

@Grossomotto These are great! No creaking while in the tent or movement off road. The 9" height is perfect for fuel economy and parking garages as the top of a tent is inline with the top of the shark fin. Also, at that height, the bed still has enough room for your gear and two 70# Retrievers to stand up without crouching.
I took the family up to the mountains this weekend for a little light 4wheeling and camping. My wife is a silversmith with welding knowledge and gave the thumbs up for Tim's great craftsmanship. Finger's crossed that the next generation of Tacoma has the same bed width because, as @HMOR_Tim said, these bars will surely outlast the truck.
