    Not a must but it’ll significantly increase your range for both send and receive. You can get 5+ miles with that antenna compared to like <1 without it.

    Just to add a little bit, everybody in wild land fire uses vhf/uhf radios where communication is the differences between saving lives/property or not. The sound quality and distance you can get out of a good radio is phenomenal. The newer radios we are transitioning to for work sound like the person is standing next to you when you’re miles apart and bouncing a repeater.

    Long antennas on handhelds are a must imo. Most of the little short ones that comes with the radios are worthless.
