I'm curious about the river levels. Heading there next week.

Most interested in how the East River is flowing at the crossing up to the Rustler Gulch trailhead and if it's passable in a stock Tacoma or if I should take my Xterra this year.

    I live in Gunnison.

There has been a few vehicles abandoned because they got stuck at Rustlers. I think the one story I heard was of a lady whom had crossed a few times throughout the day and then in the later afternoon, after the sun had caused a lot of melt, the river level rose and she got stuck in the river - truck totaled.

So, long story short, there is a lot of snow still up in that basin. An early start and you may have good luck. River levels have finally peaked, as of last week(!).

    Good luck.

Sounds like maybe I shouldn't risk it.

Nice thing for me living locally, I can give it time to chill out. I'm not planning to get into the high country until August this year; September if it really matters. If you'd like to wait, hit me up when you come up and we can get out and explore.

Maybe I could get back. But this trip is planned and I'm taking my 5 YO camping. Fording anything too deep even on foot is out with him along. I will also be going to Ridgway area late September.

Gotcha. Well that'll be fun nonetheless. If you want really good info, feel free to call the Gunnison County Sheriff's office. Or CBMA (Crested Butte Mountain Biking Association). They are good resources for that area - I haven't been out to Rustlers this year yet, so I can't say. Have fun.
