I need a new radio for my Tacoma and have been looking at the Kenwood DNX575S because of the Garmin Navigation. I've read that you can update the maps to have gamins off road maps or a third party map but I have not figured out how to do it or if only certain maps are available. All help is appreciated :mudding:

Not sure about that but they have the trx system of off-road mapping if you could somehow upload that. Might contact Garmin and ask

Can you buy the maps for the trx separately?

Thanks for that i somehow never found that page. I found the page below which lists their topomaps for purchase and such but will these be possible to use on the nav or do i have to have a specific unit for them to work?

    Yeah, I have no idea.

This is actually why I kinda like having a phone-based app like Baccountry Nav or Avenza. Those are purpose built for backcountry mapping. Plus I can take it with me when hiking or biking, too.

Also, a lot of the maps are free. There are a lot of publicly available (government produced = free to public) maps from USGS and the US Forest Service that work really well, at least in my neck of the woods. I haven't been to an area yet that the BC Nav and the Forest Service topo or USGS topoquad layers didn't have the trails I was going to be on.

You just have to download your area of interest before you go off grid.

I also have a bunch of paper maps, mostly these, that I tale with me, too. *always* carry papper maps and know how you use them (it's surprising how many people these days don't).

I got all mine form Amazon. They are high quality water proof maps with very good detail.

I am not sure I have the TRX7 and can use their app and forum to download tracks. May want to look into it and see.
