I know it’s been posted about before and I know there’s a service bulletin (or whatever it’s called for automobiles) out there because I had it done. I used TW as reference with the bulletin number for the dealership to fix it. But I cannot for the life of me find that post. I’ve searched all things I could think of and can’t come up with a post or link

It’s about the Tacoma having knock or ping while accelerating under a load. For example accelerating from 55-65 but without down shifting, you would be able to hear an obvious knock.

Trying to help a guy out on a FB page that sounds like he has the same issue.

You don't mention a year, but could it be this?

My 2006 would do this on 87 octane. Switched to 91 octane and the problem disappeared. I've been able to replicate this issue.

Have you tried a fuel system cleaner? My 15 doesn’t have any knock under load with 87 octane.

OP, you should also know that there are quite a few posts from those who have had the TSB done and report it made no difference, or even made it worse  Apparently dealers refuse to reflash back once they have done the TSB. So beware....

My '14 started the knocking and I was about to have the TSB done but the negative responses scared me away. My knocking went away following a few heavy doses of Techron concentrate and a few tanks of Shell V-Power found on their premium gas. I also found a bad injector (but no codes on a low mile engine) and replaced that. The bad injector was revealed when I pulled them and had all flow balanced. So for now its hard to determine if it was primarily the injector or a bit of carbon build up in the cylinders causing hot spots, or both.

Amsoil makes a powerfoam spray that does wonders on carbon buildup. May be worth pulling all the spark plugs and spray some foam down each cylinder. Find a vacuum port near the throttle body and spray some foam in there while the engine is running.

My 15 hasn’t had any issues yet on 87. I run Amsoil Pi every oil change since 30K when I bought the truck, 80K currently.

These were taken when I did the spark plug change at 60K. Not bad but not great

Got that knocking noise on 2005 thought it was normal until did head gasket & valves. No more noise everything runs smooth. Earlier 2nd gen had head gasket issue got CEL and finally decided to do major repairs; head gaskets, values, water pump, serpentine belt, etc

I also have a 2014 Tacoma that had the knocking per the TSB. I did the TSB and it fixed most of it. It's not 100% gone, but I rarely encounter it nowadays. I still run 87 octane fuel.

Couldn't a fuel pump cause pinging.? My 13 didn't make the recall list. But after a new fuel pump, its gone.
I found out about the recall after the $1175 trip to the dealer that told me detonation is normal.
At 115 degrees it pinged from a stop unless you had a heavy foot. the 05 never made an odd sound. It was embarrassing so i bought an 2018
Colorado. Nice truck but for how long. The look on the Toyota dealer's face was worth a lot to me
