My TRD OR 2018 came with two smart fobs, which start the engine; and also a third bigger, physical key.

This third bigger key (not one that slides out from the fob) went missing, and I was concerned that a thief could use this key to get into the cabin via the driver door and steal what is inside. I started a thread about this last night.

I spoke with a dealer, and they told me that this bigger key is only used to open the tailgate. This key will NOT open the driver door. They said that only the keys that slide out from the smart fob will open the driver door.

Is this correct? Can somebody check?

I have a 2016, but the big key is a tailgate key.

I just checked my 2018 TRD OR. The tailgate key WILL lock and unlock the driver door.

Mostly electrical shit that nobody cares about.
Also just checked my 2018 TRD Off Road. The non-fob key does indeed lock and unlock the driver door. Two bumps to the right unlocks all doors.

Pretty sure the process is to hold the key fob against the start button for a certain period of time and then press start and it should work.

I was told that they changed this for the 2018 model year. On my 2016 the tailgate key was different from the door, but on my 18 they said it was keyed the same. (I threw mine in the safe and never tried it, my truck came with a dealer installed pop n lock.)

Where do you think you lost the key? If a stranger picked it up off the street, they wont be able to look at the key then look at a parking lot full of cars, and say "yep, we have a match here."

LOL. If you ignore the month of low battery warning, you just need to hold the FOB close to ignition button while you start.

Is the battery completely dead when you do this?

Sounds like you are saying the fob does not need power to activate the push to start ignition.

In that case the fob works like a traditional chipped key. For some reason I thought the fob needed power to send the signal to the ignition.

Electronic tailgate lock. The tailgate locks and unlocks with the passenger doors.
