I’ve been toying with the idea of a new truck for sometime. Found potentially the 3rd gen i’d like to have. Only hang up I’m stuck on is it would be an out of state purchase.

Have been told to be careful when buying a vehicle out of state and bringing it back to Arizona due to being crushed on taxes twice. If this is actually a real thing?

If anyone has any insight, tips or hell even first hand knowledge with purchasing outside of Arizona and bringing it back would be fantastic.

    Thanks in advance

Why go out of state? Plenty of dealers here willing to deal on trucks.

Is this a used truck or new? Used private sale, no sales tax until you go to the AZ DMV and register it. Used or new from a dealer (e.g., Carmax), maybe you can get it transferred to AZ.

In Europe (EU27), they have a 25% VAT (value added tax). If you buy stuff there add 25% (yes expensive), unless they ship it back to the US. If the shipping is less than the VAT, its worth the hassle. You can research if you can get dealer(s) involved whom would do something similar. Kind of like buying something off the internet.

If the out of state dealership is charging tax for both states, they are swindling you even if buying used. Most dealerships worth their salt usually have a third party company that they use to calculate and collect the out of state tax and fees from the sale and handle your tags for you, or they will calculate and send back home with a paperwork package with instructions for you to handle it back home.

My manager says he buys vehicles out of state for good deals, I dont think he'd do it if it was of time. He lives in AZ as well.

Make sure it is registered in AZ only. Even if the dealer processes the registration. Don't register there and re-register when you get back. You will then pay 2x taxes.

What state? Depends on the state. We have to have a tax agreement with them. I got mine in California and brought it back. We have a tax agreement so no extra tax and was good to go. Registering is a pain but it’s quick enough. I paid in CA which was the same as here, maybe a little less but I just had to show I paid tax.

It depends on the state laws whether they collect taxes for your state of residence or not. I just bought a taco in Miami 3 days ago from an autonation dealership. They calculate and collect AZ taxes and transfer that payment to AZ.

A couple of days prior to that, I almost struck a deal with a dealer in Mississippi, who said they do not collect sales tax for your state of residence.

I live in Mississippi and bought a new truck in Texas a few years ago. I did not pay sales tax at time of purchase but when I bought my tag I had to pay sales tax at that time.

Edit #1: I had the option to pay sales tax at the dealer but did not want to finance taxes so I just paid cash for the tax when I got back to Mississippi.
