youtube tidbit I picked up today

On the new style youtube player, (all those on youtube.com now) hold down the left arrow key while the video is buffering and the game snake will pop into the video area. This is great for people such as myself stuck with shitty dsl as I can now kill a few moments while the video buffers. Enjoy

Pardon me but what does "ping" mean?

 

It's a utility that sends out a test packet to determine whether or not a host (e.g. google.com) is reachable. It also measures the time it takes for the packet to do a round trip from your computer to the host and back.

You can use it to test problems on a network. So for example, if your internet wasn't working you could test to see if it was your router by pinging your router (e.g. If your router's IP address was 192.168.1.1 you would type "ping 192.168.1.1" in a command line window). You can also ping any internet site (e.g. "ping google.com").
