If the seller wants to check that box i'd walk away. The value of the truck will be negatively impacted via carfax.

What is the current large tire size & miles since the tires were installed?

With only 5k miles on it, unless setup like a monster truck, the oversize tire mileage difference is going to be relatively minor.
I'd say there's significant odometer fraud/discrepancy and he's trying to get you to sign off on it using oversize tires as his excuse.

A ludicrous example isn't worthy of post, I doubt even a garbage or postal truck is that extreme. A 10,000 mile circle(circumference) aka lower 48 grand circuit, the inner wheels only travels 32' less than the outer wheels. [10,000/PI) -10'] * PI = 9,968'. Ignorance has never been an excuse and I'd be willing to be that most who go bigger know damn well they're logging more miles than recorded.

The question isn't how accurate it is to begin with but whether or not you changed something that affects the odometer. Tires 10% larger in diameter is outside any odo error.

It would be better to state just what the difference would be on stock tires than pretend it isn't there.

As far as the op is concerned 5k might be 5,500 but how much was after the tires were changed.

Wear or inflation pressure is small fractions of an inch, tire size change is whole inches. You aren't responsible for wear, you are responsible for changing the tire size.

Except that with bigger tires, you're logging *more* miles than recorded. One rotation of the tire is a farther distance on a bigger tire.

So what’s the problem? You get a deal when you buy it and so does the next person. Trying to cash in on a false odo reading is unethical whether it’s some shady used car lot or you. With all of the posts complaining about bad dealerships or corporate practices we don’t need to promote similar behavior on a personal level.

I think it might be a FORD guideline that is imposed on each dealer. It's more than likely just a general rule or practice. I don't think the dealer is making the decision. I'm sure the salesperson is not. I've sold modified cars before , I get the cash and I sign my name on the title. That's it. I sold a Prowler with 335s on the rear. no problem.

The price should reflect the loss of value due to not knowing how many miles are actually on the truck. I would question why he feels the box must be check with only 5k on the clock. A larger tire travels further distance per rotation and thus the odometer will have less recorded miles than actual. BUT... It's not like it's a huge difference because the truck allegedly only has 5k on it. Put it this way, if the truck is not sold at discount and has the box checked, how easily will it sell at full value to the next buyer when the clock has 50k or 100k on it?

It should sell at a lower value at every point along the line. You want others to be honest, start with numero uno. If you modified a vehicle and changed the odo accuracy then it's up to you to either get the odo recalibrated or fess up on the title transfer. Going back to stock in order to sell without doing this is fraud. And forget about saying everyone does it, they don't, it's about what you do. Always has been.
