    I've been in the market for a new overland rig lately. I'm debating between an extended (access) cab and a single cab. My thought is that an access cab would allow for a little more space in the cab which will be nice, but a single cab will have a smaller wheelbase which could be nicer for overlanding. Thoughts?

    Welcome to the forum!

    I went access cab because I wanted space inside the vehicle where I can store items and not have them exposed to the elements.

    My significant other and I backpack a lot and the access cab provides plenty of space for both our boots, extra shoes, and our loaded packs with room to spare.

    I've got an access cab and a topper on the bed. I could put everything in the back but I really like having items like a cooler, snacks, jacket and basics in the cab. I also sleep in the bed when I am camping and having things in the cab I don't have to move crap around to clear my sleeping pad.

    I'd really be cramped if I didn't have the extra cab space. Certainly when the girlfriend comes along.

    I'm more Overland than Hard Core but I haven't run into any wheel base issues.

    Like, so many.
    Current gen Tacos only come in two wheel bases. You you could do an AC long bed, or a DC short bed for the shorter of the two wheel bases. For your purposes, I suggest ACLB.

    It would be helpful if you mentioned year model(s) of interest to you and budget.

    For example, regular cabs are no longer made.

    Longer wheelbase gives a nicer ride, but of course shorter can help with certain obstacles.

    Compromise reigns supreme in vehicle choices. Pick the combination of things that covers what you will do with it 90% of the time.

    I like an access cab over a regular cab, but that's for how I use the truck. A regular cab with a topper or several other combos can be very functional as well.

    I'd go with something more than a regular cab. You will typically only find those in 4 cylinder and aren't the best for wheeling. I've got an AC and love being able to throw gear back there. I removed what little seats there were and have a platform to throw in there for a level surface for the dog or cooler or both to ride up front. Molle backed seat covers help store little stuff that you may need quickly when off road (flares, knives, flashlight,etc).

    The DC is to small for me to sleep in with a cap...although they DO make a DCLB that is just insanely long lol

    The shorter wheelbase is really only (marginally) more advantageous for hard core rock crawling.

    Given that you're going to be "overlanding" the extra storage space you'll get with an extracab or even a doublecab will be WAY more advantageous than a shorter wheelbase.

    You'll need lots of pace for all your broverlanding gear.
