Yeah, I tend to not have all that much confidence in the mechanics at a toyota dealership, let alone a Ford dealership, lol. Is there just no toyota dealership near you? Why'd you take it to Ford?

Maybe check the regional forums and ask if there's a trusted independent mechanic you can take it to.

Ford was a lot cheaper and I have only heard good things about them but I found out the hard way so now gonna test and try to fix it myself if I can’t then I’ll take it to Toyota when I have some money saved up

That's kinda like picking a podiatrist to go to when you have a toothache isn't it?

In fairness to them, you were asking them to work on a product that may have a Toyota specific issue that they are not trained in. At the point they have to throw in the towel, it's fair for them to say 'we can't' (which is what they did, roundabout) and point you to Toyota.

In fairness to you, they should have offered you at least a partial refund for just being parts changers and not solving your issue. I'd not hesitate to return and speak with the General Manager. If nothing else there should be an adjustment on your labor charges.

At least some dealers also have a reputation for being parts changers even on the brand they are trained on. Add to that their labor rates are usually higher than your average independent shop. I can't tell you how many threads I've seen where a dealer says guy needs new lower control arms because the bushings are shot (granted, indy shops do that too...).

    Agreed.

I was able to most of my own work for years. I enjoyed it, was young and poor, and Dad was a master mechanic and a good instructor. I still do much more than the average owner.

There came a time I knew I'd need help, either for specialty tools, knowledge or just my lack of time, in the mid 90's. I did some poking around and wound up at an indy shop that a friend recommended. I took him a couple of things that I already knew the answer too, just as a 'test' of integrity.

    He passed.

And I'm still using him today. For the same reasons. He's also pointed me to a great body shop and alignment shop that I might never have found on my own.

My concern is that in about 10 years he'll likely 'age out', I'll be in a 'less and less' mode, and I'll have to start looking again.

Like my dad used to say. I want a Dr with experience, but I want them young enough to be in practice longer than I need them, so I don't have to start over. :D

I get ya but the say in there add that they can work on any vehicle and fix it so that’s the reason I brought it to them in the first place if it didn’t say any vehicle I would have gone to Toyota instead you follow me :)

Sounds like they say they "can" work on any vehicle, but what I'm seeing is, they'll "try" and then they eventually "won't"

IIRC, the P0440 is a large leak and P0442 is a medium leak. Most common is the fuel cap, just because it is new does not mean that it works like it is supposed to. A smog test shop has a fuel cap tester.

as to the shop that said that they are done with your truck what does the R/O say is the customer complaint and what is/are their recommendations. If you told them the CEL is on and they replied with the 2 codes and they said that these repairs/part will fix it and it didn't, you might have some wiggle room. If you paid with a CC, deny the charges but be prepared to go to court over this. They usually won't because the consumer protection laws are in the consumers favor. If you paid cash, well, you can still go to small claims court but again, be prepared for a fight. You will win, but collecting is another story.
