TRD Sport vs Off Road

Absolutely agreed

 

It's not like the Sport model is incapable of 99% of the off road stuff you would see anyways.

To me the bigger distinction is MT vs AT and that is absolutely determined by terrain.

MT is terrible at some terrains and AT is terrible at others.

Until there is a model with full time 4x4 it's kinda ridiculous to argue the capabilities of what Toyota marketing calls OR capable.

 

Crawl control is a glorified cruise control and I would rather have a locker. Last 12 4wd vehicles I have had over the past 35 years I think 2 had lockers and none hade crawl control and I have been stuck 2 times and that was because of tires. Now a days I only go on the beach and maybe some snow.

 

I needed the OR 4x4 plus locker for my 600' long slightly uphill winter driveway that has no proper drainage that is sometimes dirt, snow, ice, or porridge like mud. I wanted short wheel base and long bed and MT. So TRD OR AC MT available only in Canada, For the True North Win.

 

You can add an aftermarket mechanical differential locker for about $600 and put it on the front or back. (Check out Lokka differentials) I considered it, but had to be honest about the fact that I haven’t really needed it, even in fairly muddy conditions.

Trim packages are just about sales options.

If the Off Road trim package were really just about true off roading capability, why do they offer it in 2WD?

 

Maybe my sales guy knew what he was doing, maybe he picked it up from someone, maybe he changed his approach because I drove a full time 4x4 FJ MT, but he described crawl control as a feature that could help in the event of accidently getting stuck due to weather related traction issues.

I think I may have raised an eyebrow if he would have pitched it as what you use when you purposely go off-roading and looking for adventurous terrain. ( what's the fun in that)

I just know that since I won't be doing hard core off road in the Taco, Crawl Control is my plan B, and my winch will be plan C, with a tow truck being plan D.

 

I would've gotten a Sport, instead of an Off-Road, but I just couldn't stomach that stupid hood scoop.

 

How do you feel about fake beadlocks?

 

So get rid of the scoop. Traded my hood with a guy doing a pro build on his OR. Great idea

 

I need to go see the Dr because I got the Sport and I like . I must be way worse than I thought .

 

Like several others said, you can likely get a better deal on a Sport. I wanted an off-road, but was able to get a Sport for 31K out the door. OR would have been 35K (none of the dealers would budge). No regrets - I don’t ‘offroad’ much and the sport does what I need it to do for 4K less. I tow with it, and it looks pretty dang sexy. Once tires are done I’ll put better shocks on it and some Faulkans or something like that.....

You won’t go wrong with either IMHO

Get the Off-Road; it's a much better nickname than "Sport."

 

I've owned both. Never cared much for the hood scoop, but I liked the TRD Sport seats in my 2012 DCLB TRD Sport. I like having the rear lock differential in my current TRD OR and the crawl control feature.

 

The same seats come in the Sport and Off Road, however the seats are different between the Generations.
