Hi all, I have recently designed and produced a winch switch bracket to hold a Blue Sea switch, that mounts in front of the battery. These are designed to fit 2nd and 3rd gen Tacoma's! The brackets are made out of 1/8" high grade aluminum and come powder-coated black.

The current design allows for a sleek and OEM looking installation with easy access, while keeping the switch tucked away in front of the battery. Please note that this bracket will relocate the lock "beeper", as the bracket uses the beepers OEM mounting hole, to fasten to. I have designed the bracket so the factory beeper(if equipped) is easily relocated to the side, as seen below.

There is a lot of debate on whether or not you should run a switch to your winch. The reason for me in particular, is that I didn't want a hot lead in the very front of my truck at the winch. In the case of a front end impact, the hot lead could potentially ground out and cause a fire. To me, adding a switch is cheap insurance to avoid this potential situation and save your beloved supreme taco from burning to ashes. Protect your investment!

So, what about running a fuse?

The particular switch I designed this bracket to fit is this Blue Sea m-Series 6006 switch. This switch has the following ratings:
- 300A @ continuous
- 500A @ 5 minutes
- 900A @ 30 seconds

*Please note that this switch has 3/8" studs. You may be required to enlarge the terminals on your existing 12V winch lead via 3/8" drill bit or step bit*

Referencing the chart below for my particular winch(Smittybilt X2O), the max amp draw is at 380A at 10,000lbs. If I were to ever be in a scenario that requires that pull, I would have to have the winch constantly on for 5 minutes for there even to begin to be any issues. I mention this, to explain why I chose the switch I did.

Wouldn't fusing the (+) lead to the winch within 12"of the distribution point negate the potential fire hazard in a front end collision?

I like the idea of a switch too, but it's no substitute for a fuse.

Either way good looking bracket, will bookmark this for when it's winch time.

Glad I'm not the only one who writes their milage on the filter. Mine has a lot more though, 217k.

and a lot less supercharger.

 

Ideally with something that has a lower amperage draw, that would be the right idea. However, according to the chart below from Smittybilt, the 10k winch will draw right under 400 Amps at full load. Multiply this by 125% and it requires a 500 Amp fuse. These fuses are out there, but are expensive for a quality product and could potentially be unreliable. For me personally, I preferred a hard switch that would just completely cut power to the winch. Your thought is correct though! And there is absolutely no reason why someone couldn't run a fuse and a switch if they wanted, although I feel as if that may be a little bit redundant.

The mileage on filter isn't necessary for me being that I keep a detailed maintenance log, but its quick and easy to peek at if Im unsure when I changed it last off the top of my head. I've put 12k miles on the truck since i got it in January Supercharger is a blast

The idea behind the switch is to leave it open unless you're about to use it right? As you're driving around town the switch would be open so that you wouldn't need a fuse?

 

That is correct. I leave the switch 'OFF' but when I know I am going to do some heavy off-roading for a day, I'll switch it on. If you need to use the winch unexpectedly, just pop the hood and switch it 'ON' and you're ready to go.

Good luck with the idea. I personally think the safety of having the main power cut to the winch is critical.

I can't lie, working in an industry where I have full access to CNC machines, waterjets, 3D printers, etc. definitely has its advantages.

As long as your bracket works, thats all that matters, looks like it serves exactly the purpose it was meant to!

 

Off topic but I have to ask: What kind of tooling setup did you use to keep the 6061 from cracking when forming?

Updated OP with my winch switch selection, and why I chose it!

 

I'm going to be honest with you, I do not have a ton of experience on a brake; I'm not 100% certain that this grade is a 6061, as I grabbed the material for the first one out of our scrap pile. The majority of AL we have cut has been 6061, which is why I made that assumption, but it is possible that it could be a 5052 grade, although I do not recall having any recent jobs requiring that alloy. I will confirm and update appropriately, if needed.

No worries, and didn't mean to call out the finished product by any means. I was just curious because those bends looks beautiful with little to no cracking and I just know 6061 is prone to cracking. It could be and you just have a very experience press brake operator, was just curious, no need to second guess or correct anything.

Also in the steel industry as well and you just peaked my interest and curiosity is all. The bracket looks great, love the edge quality of water jets, especially on that fine detail of the logo.

 

Interested in kit as long as price of switch isn't ridiculous.
