Back from a real nice trip. Hit 3 different mountains. It was good to get away.

I have a Coleman Fyreknight. I love it heats up fast and is fairly fuel efficient. Works well with cast iron, but my MSR BUGABOO kit worked very nicely as well. Sometimes a stove will have a problem with the low setting but there is a fix for that on YouTube

...a little over 4 miles after we'd started, we crested the ridge holding back the lake to a view that's worth every minute of the climb. (And descent! - if your knees don't kill you on the way down - :))

    Pupper looks sad :(

right? dude was extremely lucky that he was able to get help and get out of there so quickly. and it was almost a good thing it fell off on a trail and not on a highway or what not.

I'd just go for the UV-5R, mine has worked great for me for about 6-7 years now. with a Nagoya 711 antenna and extended battery, it lasts me a weekend of talking pretty good distances in the desert and mountains. i wouldnt put much weight on the extra wattage rating of a knockoff of a knockoff, but it seems to have a lot of stuff for the money. In the end, that's peanuts, why not give it a try I guess?

My only concern is the desert is a little different with reception than the Appalachian mountains here on the Eastern Coast.
