If you rev match properly, the amount of added wear on the engine is going to be minimal, next to zero I would dare to say, since you are not putting any load into the engine, just braking under its compression. You're going to replace your pads and rotors a lot more often if you don't.

Agreed. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I just don't happen to agree with @Garab, nor have I seen any direct evidence to prove that engine braking causes premature engine wear. If you already had bad rings and/or valve guides, absolutely you can get oil in the cylinders. As long as you're rev-matching and not downshifting into 6k+ rpm I just don't see how it causes issues.

If we want to talk about pre-mix 2-strokes I would 100% agree.

Looks like OV is catching up on july 4th orders. Mine will be here tomorrow :bananadance:

..... I'm trying to follow some of this thread. But what the hell is this debate going on about proper shifting? I'm lost.

Jeez, 4500 shifts from 1st to 2nd? Can I ask what are your shift points from 1-6? When I shift at that high of a RPM, the drop off surges my truck.

I mean, that's not my normal shift point, that's just when I want to believe my truck is a race car at the stop light lol

Otherwise I don't really look at the rpm when driving normally, I just go by sound.

What do you mean by surges your truck? When you let the clutch out into 2nd it feels like it's pulling you? That's pretty normal if the engine revs haven't dropped enough to match the speed you are going for 2nd. You can either delay letting the clutch out slightly and wait for the engine to drop, or let the clutch out faster while getting into the gas sooner to accelerate. It depends on what you are trying to do.

Without the accumulator delete mod that's where I found I had to shift to get 1-2 to feel "acceptable". Lower than that that shift was a hot mess. I still find I need to be at 3500+ for 1-2. After 2nd it doesn't seem to matter much. I also don't look at the tach, but I tend to shift earlier around town where I don't need to accelerate. At 30mph cruising I'm generally in 4th. You can hear and feel (shifter and butt dyno) when the engine wants you to shift. When I first learned to drive I did look at the tach and shifted religiously at 2.5-3.5k (I was young and didn't know what I was doing), but I quickly realized that shift points are highly dependent on the engine and gearing in the vehicle as well as its weight.

i run light and shift 1 > 2 around 4500 also m that's where the spin picks up and i have something in hand to give to 2nd. otherwise 2nd falls flat.

in other news, i double clutch all the time. and single. the truck is good with it either way, and they have a different feel. no problems.

the surge he's referring to, and i guess complaining about, is what i call power to work with... with my clutch. get it? it's why we have MT's. power control.

Ever since i've had this truck, I always shifted at 3-3.5k. When shifting at a higher RPM, i've always felt the unsettling jolt when going into second. I could always remedy that issue with more clutch modulation, but at a lower RPM the shifts are less abrupt with less clutch riding.

I'm only forced to drive like that when I'm going on the on ramps. I have the exact same setup as you.

There is never a scenario in which you need to double clutch a synchronized transmission

Is rev’ matching even necessary in normal driving. I always do it out of habit. I did auto-cross and drifting in my MR2 decades ago. Spinning out of control because of the engine braking (what ever the term is) during turns was not fun and very scary.

Seems like a big waste of gas. I don't like the feeling of a downshift without rev-matching, but is there any other benefit to doing it? Less wear-n-tear?

I rarely heel-toe in turns for fun, but I don't ever foresee a situation where I am driving a Truck so fast through turns that I would to need punch the throttle through the turn without snap oversteer. I mean many of you actually heel-toe daily? What for?

Can we start a new thread?

Say one where only peeps who might actually know some mechanical shit and driving skillz can post?

    Bueller? BUELLER?

    :der:

On the outside, the requirement of being able to read instructions could be a nice filter?
