Good morning Tacoma World. Does anyone have experience using their Tacoma, or another vehicle, as a business vehicle? Is it possible to use your vehicle for Uber, Lyft, Bungii or another type of business and benefit from IRS tax codes for businesses? Thanks in advance.

If you do the math uber, lyft, etc are money loosing deals. Basically you work for free after accounting for wear/tear/insurance/gas. Even if you did better than break even the Tacoma isn't the best choice. You would be far better off with a vehicle that gets really great gas mileage than using a gas guzzler like the Tacoma.

My wife has her own business and tracks the mileage she drives and writes it off on the taxes, but that's just a business expense. And the rule in all profitable businesses is keep your expenses low and your margins high.

If you don't mind me asking, is she able to depreciate the value of her vehicle in accordance with IRS rules?

She uses it for personal and business use so as I understand it she can only claim the 58 cents per mile allowed by the IRS. The car is also 21 years old so it's pretty much fully depreciated.

Perhaps not so much for people, but maybe you could use it to move things like the uShip site..you may remember the show Shipping Wars a few years ago

I wouldn’t because the cost of operating the truck isn’t worth the wear and tear the job would make me. Especially for a job that doesn’t require a truck.

Tires, oil, fluids, gas etc. just cost more for a truck so that cuts into the profit. If I used my SOs Honda Accord I’d do it.

Plus always remember to carry business liability insurance on work vehicles if you do this. Its critical!

I use my Tacoma for work and as a write-off. It's great. I wish the seat were a little more comfortable, but that's about it!
