Apologies if this has been covered...I've searched but not found the answer.

I'm about 1 year into owning a 1st gen (2004) Xtra Cab TRD 4WD. I did the leveling kit up to to the 5100's, painted my rims black, put on some BFG's, put a mattress in the back under the shell, quit my job, packed up my shit and hit the road for 3 months to mountain bike as much of the western US I could in that time frame. Two days into the trip, with all my stuff packed, I learned that my leaf pack was shot. I wasn't patient to sit around waiting for a leaf pack set to ship, so I had a shop in Bend, OR put in some airbags they had handy. These leveled me out(actually more, so much lift!) and off I adventured.

Fast-forward to now and I want to fix up the rear end. My main offroading is lumbering around in the Sierras on rough forrestry roads. I'm totally fixated on the Dakar pack (CS046RA/CS046RB), but I'm hung up on the 3" when my 5100's (33-247724, 33-247717) say 1.5".

I like the pricepoint of the Dakar and the marketing worked it's magic on me, but which one needs to be longer: shocks or leaf springs? Do bump stops come into play at all to make a shorter shock fit a longer leaf? I could even self-justify going w/ an OME pair to match, but if I go above 2" on a 1st gen, am I going to run into other parts getting maxxed out and needing replacement or extension on the rear end?

I assume once I replace the leaf packs (and shackles), I can forget about the airbags unless I really load up the back, right?

I'd ask these questions at a shop, but I think I'm accepting the labor-of-love that is owning a 15 year old truck, so I think it's time for me to step up and try my hand at installing these myself.

Here's a pic from just under Imogene Pass, CO.
