Firestone broke my glove box latch

Long story short, I went to get my normal yearly inspection w/ an alignment at firestone. When I was putting my registration back in the glove box, the latch wouldn’t keep it closed. I mentioned this before leaving and some how the rude mechanic got it to work by slamming it shut and walked away(without a single word). This didn’t fix the problem bc it still would not latch when I tried. I’m going back again tomorrow but is there anything I can do to guarantee a fix? Litigate?

 

My question would be why in the hell was the mechanic going through your glovebox?

 

Probably looking for his wheel lock key

 

I assume you've checked to make sure there isn't something blocking it from closing easily.

 

Likely checking the cabin air filter.

I tell them not to check mine.
I typically replace my filter 1x a year.
Plus I left the little shock absorber off.
So unless you hold on to the door it slams open.

OP, I’d attempt to make a diagnosis myself.
Then at least you’ll have an idea how the problem could have happened.
If you are going to try to convince or prove that some one did something, you fair better by explaining how it might have happened.

What is this inspection thing of which you speak?

I agree with others, diagnose the issue yourself so you have someway of explaining the problem - IF you go back to that shop. I wouldn't. You already have a clear idea how much they value your business...

 

OP, you are now a member of the “ever since” club

 

It was part of my yearly state inspection. They stated that part of the inspection was to see if I needed a new cabin filter. I’ve checked the hinges and attachments and came to the conclusion that the latch mechanism somehow got busted.

I’m usually not the one to complain but it’s my jewel. I’ll pull it apart and mess with the latch some more.

If all else fails, Firestone’s getting a visit.

 

What kind of state inspection checks a cabin air filter??? That is the funniest thing I've heard about inspections. It should just be like brakes, horn, lights, steering system, chassis components, and any major fluid leaks

 

If he slammed it shut and now it wont close,Firestone is on the hook for a new latch and install.

 

I believe it is part of trying to make money off of an inspection, rather than just the cost of an inspection. ''You passed inspection' but, ....
I actually had one schmuck hold me hostage on an inspection because of a tear in a windshield wiper. One that i never realized, and in as much as it was right in front of me when the wipers were in use, i suspect i would have noticed and addressed had it been of consequence. I ended up having to buy their garbage, and at an inflated price, to just get out of there with the sticker. Those shitty wiper lasted through about 3 weeks of winter weather, and never worked worth a damn.

Anyway, standard procedure, i think, at least in my parts.

 

And I thought Maine was bad. At least they only fail us if something is mechanically wrong with the truck.

 

Well I couldn’t get it fixed and firestone is not honoring any of it. Their reason was that it could have been bad timing of a failing bad pin. With no garage cameras and proof I’m out of luck.

On the plus side my girlfriend thinks it’s roomier without a glove box installed.

Bought a used glove box on eBay. Going to break open the glove box and post pictures soon.
Is it me or Can you not take it apart and get to the latch?

 

Same thing just happened to me. Hopefully Mine doesn’t give out as soon as yours. These shops are always trying to get money out of your pockets.

 

Make sure everything is lined up correctly. If he did have to check the fliter, he would have had to take the door off and more than likely did not put everything back properly.
Could be a simple fix.

If you truly believe it started with them, say something to the store manager... my experience with them is that they'll go to great lengths to not have a pissed off customer. They ain't cheap (I've seen their work be way more than the dealer...) but they're willing to cut into their profit margin to keep customers happy.

I've seen them write up and order parts, find out they ordered the wrong stuff and the right ones are 3-4x as much, and they just shrug like they'll make it up next time, probably cuz they will.
