The LED SAE J583 Fog Pod & Fog Light Review

I need more lights! When are you going to review light bars or do you already? Need a 30” single row to sit on top of the bumper.

 

I haven't done light bars, though I have all the equipment needed to do so. However, good light bars are expensive and I pay for most of this stuff out of my own pocket. For product recommendations in traditional off road patterns I would look at Baja Designs as one of the best for output and color temperature quality. If looking for more usable light patterns for street driving, Rigid sells bars with SAE driving patterns which will be more useful than spot or flood on the street to better blend distance projection with area coverage, but the color temp quality is not as good as Baja.

 

Would having 4 of the same lights be redundant or would they add more usable light? I'll look into the KC G34s I definitely like their color temp but wasn't sure if they'd fit a typical steel bumper light hole. Thanks.

I have a 21" single row 54 watt from superbrightleds. My dad gave it to me as a gift. It has been on a 94 Miata as a daily light, then on my Dakota as a daily light until I finally got pulled over after 5 years lol. Now it's on my ATV, it's been under water quite a few times, not much moisture in it, yes it's not the brightest but no issues yet, and by atv deep I mean past waist deep to me at 5 11.

 

That would be a way to help reduce costs compared to running 30" bars, since most are just scaled up versions, but still pretty expensive and lots of permutations. Just running some preliminary cost numbers, purchasing 10" bars from KC, Rigid and Baja would cost roughly $1200 alone. Granted I paid roughly that for the Morimoto headlight test, but it is easier to recoup more of the cost by selling one limited availability item vs many several that are currently available.

Personally, I think you should take the rest of the summer off and enjoy yourself. You've done more than enough work here and I think I can speak for most TW members when I say that we enjoy the professional, objective and non-biased results. Keep up the good work! (But take a short break!)

Thanks for the offer! I’d need to get some other vendors on board to make it happen, but I’ve got a few other projects to hammer out first, including tent lighting mods and running these BDs as aux fogs plus more.

A break? I haven’t done that in so long I’m not even sure what that is anymore.

Map out the offers, would be a cool road trip across the states. Find some trails and have fun, not many near me unfortunately. That's the reason I got into atvs, more parks near me than jeep parks.

While I waited and wanted to have the BD SAE fogs, I cannot be that guy blinding everyone.

While my personal preference is for a round fog instead of square, looks like I am going KC for factory replacement fogs.

BD will be my off-road lights only. I just hope my OCD for everything to match doesn’t kick in between having KC and BD, if it does I will just had to throw some Rigid in the mix so I can feel like a total basket case.

 

Trust me, you will not be disappointed with the KC's.

 

My SAE bajas arrived... really considering selling them and getting the Rigid D series selective yellows...

 

A 3rd party is independently testing Baja Designs fog pods for SAE compliance, due to nearly every industry professional I've spoken with highly doubting the products compliance with the upward light limit for an SAE fog pattern. I will have access to the compliance results and share them once published. Feedback within the industry has been exceptionally harsh on these lights, as in the worst I have ever seen. It is worth noting the lights are utilizing the 1960s F spec vs the far more modern fog F3 spec. If I was to very politely tone down and summarize the responses I've received from the SAE industry, it would be that Baja does not understand SAE patterns or the purpose of an SAE foglight, or lacks the engineering abilities to comply. (Not my words) One quote: "Why are they using an archaic 1960s photometric specification, and then even screwing that up???"

I had really hoped Baja would walk in an own this market space, but they have made a major design blunder.

I was hoping the same. I've never been had a Baja Designs light, I have a set of Rigid Industries Dually D2 driving pattern. Like them but wanted to try BD. That's the 2 top dogs (that I'm aware of in the lighting game). The only perk I can see that I will like from the RI lights is the ability to change covers ( in my application atleast) where BD I'd have to choose from white or amber len. I know that the amber cover will kill the light output but I dont get that many foggy day around my area, famous last words haha. Would be down right awesome if BD asked Crashnburn80 to help with a Rev 2 version. I've learnt a lot from reading his posts about lighting, and now I'm looking at other people's lights and thinking about the pattern temperature spread etc etc. Cant thank him enough for the education.
