Anyone using CB radios?

Or, are these old school and outdated?

I had one in my F-350 and was thinking about getting another.
I also thought it might come in handy in the event of an earthquake or other disaster.

If anyone is still using one, any recommendations?

I still use mine on long highway trips. (Cobra). I have it mounted with industrial velcro against the console/carpet near my right leg, then I store it under the driver's seat when it is not in use. I am using a magnetic mount antenna and store that behind the back seat.

 

Pretty worthless for emergency use (shortwave radios are much better for this use).

CB's are the standard for trail communication offroad. I wish TW would get on board with that because leading trail runs where none of the other trucks have a radio is a bit annoying.

 

<-- basic CB Ultra III with 9' cable/ 5/8 Firestick bed mounted. Love it and use it often with other friends out on the trails. Fun to have on roadtrips to hear the wackjob truckers sometimes.

Anyone know how to mod devices? I want to chip and de-govern my unit from the 4amp to a Superchip and beep mod

 

I'm not familiar w/ shortwave. Do you need to get a license for shortwave?
What about a mobile CB for the truck and a base mounted CB for emergencies?

Yes, Cobra 29 and 3' firestik. It's a large radio so it's stored when not in use.

 

Ham Radio is where it is at for Emergency communications. It does require a license, but the test is easy. Ham radio is getting more and more popular with serious off roaders because of superior range and audio quality.

 

Due to the trail runs we're having in AZ, I ordered a Uniden with a magnetic antenna and a PA speaker. Otherwise, I wouldn't have much use but I figure the $100 is worth it for talking with the other trucks on the trails. And, it is fun to listen to trucker chatter on road trips.

 

How many people here that use CB tune their antennas?

 

what channel is common for the truckers to be on?

I did. The Cobra 29 has a built-in SWR meter so it was easy.

 

Heres my cheap yard sale Radio Shack CB. It keeps me entertained on the way to work.

 

And my just as cheap antenna. I have about $30 invested in mine. Not the best setup, but cheap and unobtrusive.

 

I have one somewhere....and used to have two of them.

We used them constantly when I went offroading. Keep the groups in communication. Currently, If I take a trip with a group of vehicles - we use them to communicate.

I have Uniden 520 - great little CB. I've used it with a Shorty 24" K40 power whip and also used them with a generic magnet mount for using it with any vehicle we're driving.

 

I used to use a CB, Found out a 2 meter radio works better for trails and other stuff.

 

That would be channel 19, commonly used for general chat.

I have an Uniden CB in my truck, usually pics up 1-2 miles away, depending on how many mountains are around.

Mindland with a 4' Firestick 2 and PA - I use it for trails - when I get bored on long highway trips and the Mister Microphone thing is fun. Overall, not a bad thing to have, especially on trails with other off road guys -

 

I was thinking I'd go the route of the Midland 75-822 (with just a magnetic antenna)

Guess it all depends on what its going to be used for, but for just trail runs, I think something like this would be perfect.
