Cab mount relocation?

Today I was watching a YouTube video about getting 35s on a Tacoma (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXdkP5Z3Tq4). Technically, this guy in some sense really didn't get 35s on his Taco (he still had a lot of rubbing as of the making of the video), a fact that he readily acknowledged. One solution he is pondering is a cab mount relocation, such as this one:

What are the pros and cons of cab mount relocations?

 

@KENNY has done it, other than losing the safety of the cab mount deflecting the tire from crushing your cab in a wreck I think it’s a good option. When/if I go to a larger tire, I will be doing the relocate.

 

Lbfab (runnin4tacos) just released a kit too. This is a must have for 35’s.

 

Ive seen guys need it and not need it. Ive also seen how having the right wheel bs and alignment is the the most important thing. I personally wont be doing one, unless its absolutely necessary for my truck.

Hmm, would it even pass a safety inspection if the cab mount was relocated? Curious as I am planning to do this as well, but am thinking strongly against it.

 

I dont see how a mount would interfere with a safety inspection. Then again, our standards in Texas are quite different than wherever you may be.

 

Only reason I think it would is because the cab mou t is designed to deflect tyres out and away from the truck cab in ana accident to prevent crushing.

Doubtful they would even look at that, but I research everything to death before I make decisions.

 

Yeah, most of these IG/youtube guys get 35"s to "fit" because they don't do anything more than forest service roads and won't ever utilize the space they gained so they won't tub the firewall.

Well with what some of these youtube channels are making it's a good secondary income. Typical 100k subscriber makes enough to live off of provided they are getting the views and it's not all fake.subs.

I've thought about doing it as well, but I tend to go solo most of the time so it makes it difficult to video everything and I'm sure not many would want to follow me on a trail and see my ugly mug telling my dog to.stop barking because she wants the front seat.

 

In fairness to the guy with this particular channel ("Last Line of Defense") he does appear to get out on some rough patches of trail. But that made the tight fit all the more surprising a choice for me.

 

Not sure about the inspection part, but I was talking over with a friend of mine who is a mechanic and does a lot of work on Tacos. He was really hesitant about this idea. His exact quote: "you realize that if you recess this thing [the cab mount], there is basically nothing in between the cabin and the wheel if you get hit from certain angles?"

He also emphasized that even if you get rid of street rubbing you could still have big time well hits on the trail. He pointed out that a degree of lift to really make 35s work off road could introduce all kinds of potential suspension geometry problems, all of which can be dealt with but the point is that it wouldn't be as simple as just cutting and sticking on 35s.

I have to weigh the idea of this carefully.

For me and what I do, it's just not worth it. The can of worms you open is huge, especially if you wanna do it right. Plus it detracts from the whole reason I got a Toyota, reliability.

 

That's a very, very good point. We might be losing sight of the whole original selling point of the Taco.

 

if you have a decent welder you trust this will absolutely not be less reliable. the current cab mounts are paper thin steel with lots of bends and crap. Something like the alpine design which is 3/16th will be mega beef if welded right. if you gusset, even better

 

Start blowing CV's, ball joints, wear and tear on the rack etc etc. For me it's not worth it. I think my hard deck is 33's

 

I meant suspension reliability etc. Plus the stock mount is boxed and isn't really that thin. Took me a while to cut haha.
