I have this one and it’s very well made and a super easy install. Bit pricey but the extra peace of mind is nice. Sorry about your tailgate man.

Edit: there is also a member here on TW that sells plug and play kits so that your tailgate locks with your keys, no splicing.

You gotta cut your losses. 1k is a big price to pay, if tail gate in question has all the wiring in tact I'd just meet him. If it seems legit (trust your gut) just buy it. I am not into buying warm parts, even if it saves me a G. Fuck thieves.

Regardless, If and when you meet this shady fella, if you dont have overwhelming evidence to BELIEVE that the tail gate you're buying is stolen, buy it. My two cents.

In the mean time buy that lock. I met the member who makes and sells those locks. Hes a good guy trying to make a buck and of course help tail gates from being stolen. (He owns a nice 2nd gen too....)

    Good luck to you.

I just bought the SaBellCo lock. Solid investment but anybody who says this forum is free is a liar. I'm sorry for your loss OP. And btw California, Texas and Florida are the top 3 highest populated states in the USA. They're going to be at the top of many lists that only look at quantity. I think I also read once that 25% of pickup trucks sold in the US are sold in Texas. So I guess everything really is bigger in Texas. Including tailgate thefts. I wouldn't be surprised if Hawaii had the highest percentage of tailgate thefts though. The Tacoma was the number one selling vehicle there for 15 years straight IIRC.

East coast of Kauai is almost nothing but Tacomas. They fixed the road to Polihale and now even a Honda Accord can get out there. But Kekaha park fishing is almost 100% Tacomas, except the tourists in Jeeps. Sucks the tailgates get taken, it's such a small island.

Now I want some Ishihare poke!

    NO!
You're only supporting the market, that got you!

Next time, look at insurance deductibles, lower deductibles usually add very little cost to plan. Insurance agents don't tell you this, because they don't want you to use it. I took this advice, and went from $500 to $250, and I think it added less than $10-15 every 6 months.

So after thinking about it for a long time I decided to go through the insurance with it . It is tempting to buy one for cheap but like I said it’s probably stolen and why keep feeding these assholes that steal them. This was a costly lesson but I learned from it . As soon as I get my new tailgate I’ll be installing the pop and lock and the SaBellCo lock for extra protection. Thanks guy I appreciate all your feedback

If you’re in the South Bay Area there’s a bunch of auto dismantlers up in Sacramento, if it’s worth your time to make the drive up here.
