Cap lock options, single or double?

Finally convinced myself I need the ARE bed shell for my 2014 Tacoma. Just one feature I cant decide on is the rear window lock system. Do you go with a single center T lock or double locks on either side? Which is more secure?

 

Neither will stop a semi-determined thief. My philosophy is to keep anything of value out of sight. Nothing of real value stays in the truck.

 

Mine came with 2 outside but it was difficult to lift the door so I drilled a couple of holes and installed a center handle, as well. Edit: regrettably nothing is secure if someone wants it

 

Sure, in the end its just attached to some breakable glass... I guess the question is more, whats the deciding factor for people with single or double locks? Aesthetics, function or something else?

Center handle is more convenient, two handles is probably a little more resistant to be snatched open. None of them are particularity secure unless you go with one of the high quality metal versions, and even those could be pretty easily pried open from what I've seen.

 

I don't know what ARE caps are like but I went with a double pull on my Leer because their Center pull was with frameless glass & didn't lift open as high due to design. My Leer dealer had both onsite so I could open them up.
Edit: the frameless glass had hinge like thing where framed glass with 2 handles had two gas props. This again was Leer brand.

 

As you mentioned glass is glass if someone wants in they’ll get in. Anyway I’ve got a double lock and I honestly don’t like it. I’m in and out of the cap pretty often and it gets annoying having to twist both sides open, first world problem I know. I end up leaving one side latched while I’m using or near the truck (road trip, camping, or wheeling). When I have valuables in the cap I latch both and lock them but again slightly annoying haven’t to unlock and open two handles. I’d like to switch over to a single handle but that’s just my opinion I hope you’re happy with what you settle on!

 

I have the doubles on my Ranch cap that work fine but would also agree, not very theft resistant!

 

If someone wants in they are getting in, that said the doubles seem easier to pry open since it is typically a short flat cam(easily bendable) attached to each lock. Where the center lock is going to have long solid rods that engage into the latch. Plus if your like me and you work out of the truck and have to open the back a lot having twice the locks gets annoying pretty fast.

 

Two fairly flexible rods that typically go through a plastic ring on their way to the edge. I've seen a couple of shells that have been broken into and it looks to me- I haven't tried- that grabbing that single handle and snatching flexes the rods, the plastic breaks and the window pops open. My old Tacoma shell had two handles and some POS snatched it to get in as well (the dealer had them on crappy quality video breaking in while it was there for service). I was able to bend the metal tabs back into place and luckily the fiberglass wasn't damaged. Honestly, neither is very secure. Even the cheap metal paddle handles/latches can sometimes be snatched if you try; we've had bums open compartments on the ambulances while we were on scenes.

I leave some camping gear in the back all of the time and I toss my old summer bag, a couple of pillows and a cheap Mexican blanket kinda haphazardly over it.

Years ago in my river running days lots of folks would loop a piece of cable over the cap handle and down to the hitch. Given the large windows I'm not sure how much good it actually did, other than keep us from playing jokes on each other. The best deterrent I recall from back in those days was a couple of boaters catching two locals breaking into another boater's truck at the 76 bridge and gently explaining why that was a bad idea.

 

i have single on my cap and put handle with elock so i dont have to use key it unlocks from my remote when i double click to unlock all doors

 

Unlocking two handles would be a pain in the ass. The single handle locking mechanism is a little stronger but none are really that secure. The keys are pretty interchangeable too.

 

I've tested this out, and discovered the following:

Single Tap: UPPERCASE

Double Tap: lowercase
