Speak of the devil, just did some rust spots on my hitch today, wire wheel on the drill, cleaned with brake cleaner, then painted POR-15 on. Looks great and my OCD is happy.

Did you bother with a respirator or anything like that? How did you apply the POR-15? Thanks!

No respirator, outdoors and not spraying, I bought the little can and just brushed it on.

By the way, which POR 15 did you use?

Topcoat in Chassis Black matches perfect.

I guess I have one other question: I assume that dealing with these rust spots myself invalidates the warranty on the frame? Not that it really matters since I probably already screwed that up by putting sliders and skids underneath.

Hmm that is a good question, I fortunately didn't keep my 2008 or 2011 so never had to deal with the replacement / coating process, I know it involved an inspection and wonder if some were getting denied because of as you alluded to working on the frame, however I would find it hard to believe they would void it for simply touching up the paint / finish, now CMC, other things that compromise the actual design, etc. I could see.

Yes, I tend to agree. I wonder if the dealership offers any service for small rust spots. Something tells me no.

I feel like my truck has these same spots. Not even the least bit worried. I should probably get under there and sort it out though.

If this was the extent of it I definitely wouldn't care. Maybe just dab down some chassis grease or something. My concern is that I don't want to let this go any further.

Tacos have a bad rust reputation. Is that deserved? I'm not sure. Maybe it is partly about Toyota owning it. I know my old Jeep CJ had frame rust (I recall that rust was a non-stop pita issue in the winch cables too). Somehow that didn't seem like that big a deal in a vehicle I had rolled over twice offroad.

I think it's deserved, I think there's still some frame rust issues. But for me and where I live, I'm not too worried about it.

Yep, every gen has been plagued with it. 3rd gens are the same design just supposedly a different material / coating process, we shall see...after living in AZ, I'll agree, rust isnt really an issue, but holy rock chips.

So, reviving this for a sec, I am putting the Por-15 on on Saturday and then adding a top coat of paint on that. But I have one other question: Would you all wire brush off those small rust spots I currently have or just leave them and paint over them? Thanks.

I wire brushed mine to bare metal because I'm OCD, but its not necessary, neither is the top coat ontop of it.
