    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

Lucky = Lots of cool people to wheel with, close to lots of places to go wheel.

Un-lucky = I hate this fucking State with every drop of blood in my body... for reasons that can not be discussed... under threat of banishment.

Just replying to the overall thread. 1st Gens have aged now and during the time of production, there wasn't a hug market for add-ons with the existing technologies. Now that we have advanced tremendously, we have now have multi manufacturers making similar competitive products, unfortunately older model Tacomas may suffer purely for their age. While many out there are breaking, rusting, totaled in accidents, etc.. there simply no incentive to make new aftermarket parts for older trucks.

Well in the 1st gens hay day there was no such thing as overlanding. It was called drive down a dirt road and pitch a tent somewhere.
Costs alot of time(= $) to develop specific things for a vehicle. Since less if them are on the road it's harder to make back the investment.

That's already been pretty well debunked.

People make plenty of products for trucks FAR older than 1st gen tacomas. Hell, my dad has a whole catalog of parts for his 1950 Ford, and there are FAR more 1st gens on the road than F1 pickups.

I just order my shit for pick up and bring totes with me. Normally don't even have to go in the store.

It's the principle of it though. These fucking schmucks are worried about plastic bags and straws while we have some of the worst education scores in the Country, we burn out of control every year, and we're about to have a bubonic plague outbreak in LA of biblical proportions.

But I'd better just leave this alone, its gunna put me in a mood for the rest of the day, and I'm about to start spouting stuff that'll get me in trouble.

I wish I could live in the State of Jefferson.

Didn't say no one was making them. Just that there are far less vendors doing so.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
Coming from a manufacture I'll put my 2c in

The Market for 1st gens is rapidly declining, The manufactures you see selling 1st gen parts have be doing so for years. So the R&D is done the cost to make another unit is low. We still make 1st gen parts but they have been slowly getting removed from our line as they sit on the shelf for years sometimes. If we get single digit sales on a product in a year as soon as our stock is gone we remove them from the line.

You will not see very many companies coming out with new 1st gen parts as there is not a large enough market to support the R&D it takes to design a complete new product for most large parts. Sure small things will be getting designed but bumpers and skids will be slim to none in the years going forward.

We tried a skid plate group buy and only get about 10 people after about a year of the thread being made.

I drive and stitch together my 1st gen not because I'm a poor college kid, but because I'm a responsible ass adult with 4 kids to feed and don't want $600 car payments for 72 months or have to worry about putting a little scratch on a leased vehicle. I haven't had any issues finding aftermarket parts for my 2001 other then LCA skids (which would have been TOTALLY for shows anyways). Bumpers, skids, rock sliders as well as OEM replacement parts have been fairly easy to find, and still priced accordingly.

I like gear just as much as the rest of the crowd, but for me its the use of the product that gives me the satisfaction. I think the "broverlanding", look at my latest and greatest on Instagram/FB/Twitter etc... has everything to do with most of my generation being hooked to online praise, the "it didn't happen if it wasn't on FB" crowd. It's not just the overlanding crowd, it's everything nowadays... from what coffee/beer you drink to where you bought your groceries. Like others have said, it's like the newer crowd of folks look down on those that drive older trucks and use a, god forbid... tent with poles instead of an RTT. We get hung up on the latest and greatest STUFF... but forget that a bone stock old ass truck can get you further then you think.

I mean, Matt was getting a little testy, but understandable when you get 3rd genners coming here and saying we only have 1st gens because that's all we can afford.

Keep in mind that a ton...TON of trucks were bought back and scrapped by Toyota for the first part of the frame recall. Some got new frames on the second half of the model run but a fair number just rotted away in the hands of people that didn't know or care about the new frame program... In the Midwest where salt is used, seeing a first gen on the road is relatively unusual because the original frames were toast in 5-10 years. That takes a bunch trucks out of the secondary market where enthusiasts would have otherwise bought them and spent money on mods. Your perspective is skewed living in CA where vehicles last forever. There just aren't enough trucks out there in middle America to support a big aftermarket outside of a few dedicated companies.

Look at the second gen/third gen/LandCruiser vendors...how many different companies really need to make sliders or bumpers before they are all just kind of the same? I think we've seen the market correct with some of the vendors going out of business recently.
