Curious what impact modifications had on your resale value? I know I won’t get back what I put into it. My question is more, if I modify too much, will I lose out on the ease of Tacoma Resale?

Want to lift the truck and put on high clearance bumpers. Plan on keeping the truck for at least 10 years. Although that was my plan last truck too and ended up trading it in after 6.5 years.

Anyone have a hard time selling their modified rig due to cutting and fabrication?

    Thank you

If you sell back to a dealer, they will not be interested on what is on the truck. You will get ZERO return on anything you put into it for mods. However, they will happily turn around and put a giant price on that vehicle and squeeze every penny they can out of it.

Private sale is different as you might be able to recoup SOME of the money you spent on mods.

Zero added value if trading to a dealer. If selling privately, it's your rules really.

That being said, if you do dealer trade, they will give you nothing extra for your upgrades, but turn around and sell it for $7500 extra!

@Trident904 got good money for his chopped up 3rd gen when he traded it in. But dealers look at how easy something is to flip, cut bedsides and fenders won’t be an easy flip....

My fenders and bedsides were cut up and dented and scratched all to hell and my flares were missing.

That’s kind of my thought. Although I wouldn’t trade in again. Saw what they listed my 2007 for after trading it in and decided I won’t give the dealer that pleasure again.

And you didn’t have any issues when it came time to sale?

Maybe I’ll just keep looking for options that don’t require cutting. I get the feeling a CMC isn’t that big of a deal, but chopping the bed and body would be more of a turn off.

Nope. The dealership gave me $28k for it, as is. They sold it for $32k 3 days later.

As said earlier, the dealer usually won't give you anything over blue book or black book. From what I noticed dealer trade on these are not much better than KBB...and don't try to sell it to Carmax, I had them give me a price on mine just for fun and they offered me 23K for a v 2016 TRD OFF RD DCSB 70K. The resale on these seem to be the strongest on private party sales for sure.

I have never traded a Tacoma. Trade ACV was horrible. Always sold them privately for less than dealers advertised prices. However. The rule to go by is If one gets $6000 discounts off the front, they can expect $6000 lower resale. They already gained the monetary advantage of paying less upfront.

    Limited discounting = Higher resale

    Higher discounting = Lower resale.

Not gonna get $6000 off a truck then expect a higher number on the trade.

The best leases are those with a high residual. Tacoma falls in that category.
Ford's stated residual is 62% after three. Not bad considering the huge discounts one can get on any Domestic.

I respectfully disagree. I paid $33k out the door for this truck brand new. It stickered at $38,990 and I walked in to the dealership with a blank check from my bank and got for the price I wanted. The key to it is finding a vehicle that has been on the lot for a long time. This one was a special order TRD OR with the tech package and dual climate controls and SE toyota shipped it to them with a manual transmission (dealer error on the order) and they had it on the lot for 4 months and couldn’t sell it. I watched this truck for 3 months before I went and picked it up.

Research, patience, and not financing through the dealership will get you the best deals.
