So having seen these but never driven in one...
Does the stereo turn off when the car cuts out?
Can you move quckly, like for an ambulance if your car is off? Or do you have to wait 5 seconds? Eg what is the lag?

I was jogging yesterday and someone making a left behind me had their car cut out. It went from silent to turning over. Thought it was odd as a pedestrian.

It's like a 0.5-1 second after letting off brake, i.e., once you get your foot over to the gas, it's started and ready to move

I still hate it, just annoying to hear it shut off and on in traffic or at a light. And most cars yes, you do have to touch the disable button every time you start the car, the setting doesn't save in most cars.

Have always been curious of the strain and/or lifespan of the starters in the vehicles with this feature

Everything runs as normal, just the engine cuts out to save gas. It will come back on if there is too much drain on the battery, AC in my case, or when you release the brake. I've gotten used to it. In the A4, the engine will turn back on even before you fully release the brake. I've learned exactly where the pressure point is to get the engine back on with the brake pedal, so I can get it to switch on just before the light turns green. It's like second nature now.

A lot of newer cars do that, auto stop and start. Basically it's a fuel efficiency thing

What was said below. The ones I’ve driven, the engine is running and ready to go before your foot is off the brake and on the throttle. Everything runs as normal except the engine is not running. One Volvo I was driving I didn’t even notice it was doing it until I noticed the RMP’s at 0.

A good portion of the newer F150s have this. The Chrysler Pacifica also does this. Several Chevies have this too. I see this more commonly on American brand cars than anywhere else.

A lot of things must be driven off electric and not a belt. The oil pump has to be constantly running and not cutting on and off.

If the engine isn’t running why would the oil pump need to be running?

My ecoboost F150 has it, it’s a little strange at first but I barely notice it anymore. I’m all for it, my full size pickup is getting better MPG than my 4 cylinder regular cab Taco.

Cool, is Al Gore going to pay for your new starter?

Much of conventional engine wear comes at start up. Due to metal to metal contact before oil pressure gets up to the point where the oil can “float” the concerned surfaces.

I'm betting it's a thousand dollar starter. So much for savings.

I absolutely despise the auto-start stuff. I’ve rented a ton of Rams & Jeeps and several Fords with it, and have had to live with that crap for weeks on end. Sure, you can turn it off every single time you get in the vehicle, but I’d rather not have it at all. Most wear and tear on an engine happens at start up, and starters only have so many cranks. Just can’t stand it, and would permanently disable such a feature in any vehicle I would own. But that’s just me.

I have a feeling several of the posters in this thread pull over in these and yell at clouds.

What are they going to do when self-driving cars become standard? Or when we colonize space?
