Hi all my dad bought his first 2015 Tacoma a base RWD access cab with the 2.7 and 4 speed. My question is D drive or overdrive or is 3rd normal gear? And we drove the truck in D and it seems to me like its overdrive and we did so for about 150+ miles. My question is did this do any damage to the transmission? RPMs never went to redline nor went higher than 3-5k. Also does the transmission need a fluid change? It’s used and has 57,000 on it still under powertrain warranty. Thank you.

    Welcome to TacomaWorld!

Just stick in D and go. The transmission will shift into overdrive when you’re cruising at highway speed

Is it an automatic, just driving around town? Stick it in Drive and let it choose. If you’re towing or driving offroad then depending on circumstances down shift.

Only the highest gear will be an overdrive gear. If you run it in 3rd all the time you will be wasting fuel. Put it in D and the automatic transmission will do what it do.

Always D, slap into 3 for downhill grades or if towing and the 4 banger is struggling.

A transmission fluid change is always a good idea every 5 years or 60k.
