Why does every offroad tire/wheel combo that I've ever owned look like a inner-tube?

    Hi all,

Its just about time that I need to start shopping for new tires and I'm hoping to use this opportunity to finally find the perfect balance of wheel and tire to achieve the look I'm going for. In the past, I've always managed to end up with tires that like something I'd float down the river in but I can't seem to figure out what I'm missing.

My preference is when the tires have a more of a boxy look with the squared off edges between the sidewall and the tread. Is this achieved solely by the type of tire or does the wheel factor into this? Does anyone have any recommends on a specific brand I should be looking at?

Any advice you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated.

If your wheel is 8" wide and the tire is 10.5" wide you'll always have that flare. If you want something flatter you'll need your wheels and tires to have the same width.

Now this means you're more likely to grind your wheels on rocks, curbs, etc, but it'll have the look you want

its your wheel n tire combo. Big diameter rim. No thanks.

Give me a 255/85 pizza cutter on a 16in rim. Now thats a mean looking setup.

Wheel plays a factor as far as width but a lot of it is tire design and the width of the center tread section and the belt package under it. If you want a square looking tire youll end up having to look at the extremely aggressive ones with huge side lugs like a maxxis trepador

How did they even mount those? How's the bead staying 'attached' to the rim lip?

Look closely at tire specs. WWW.tirerack.com is a good place to compare. You have a section width, which is the width of the tire at it's widest point. You also have a tread width measurement. The section width is pretty much the same among manufacturers within the same size, but not the tread width.

Just looked up 5 random tires in 265/75/16 and the section width was 10.5" on all of them. Tread width varied between 7.9" and 8.7". The widest being BFG KO2's

Those rims look way too wide for those tires .l hate that look when the tires stick out way past the body.

See, nice and flush with the body lines. Rims look like there on correctly, not backwards looking sticking way past the body . And the tire to rim size is perfect . Not to low profile, but not too balloon looking either.
